The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows an old Chinese woman (amah) selling drinks made from ground almond called in Chinese as ‘heng ying’. This kind of drink was very popular in the old days. Behind her is a Chinese drug store. A paper fan is seen used as an amulet to ward off evil.

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows an ancient ‘wat’ called Wat Kumpaeng Lang located in Phetchaburi Province. This abandoned Wat was originally a Khmer place of worship. It was later turned into a Buddhist temple and a shrine hall was constructed. However, the outlook of the place has not much changed due to the existence of sandstone walls and four Khmer style pagodas.
The original of this photo was shot in 1935 by Robert Latimore, an agronomist from John Hopkins University. Rented plots by Chinese to grow vegetable were also seen.

During his years in Siam he spent time in Chanthaburi in the1930s including Tha Mai area where we live.
The University of Wisconsin has a huge digital archive of his photography.
He was in Siam pre WWII, returned in 1946, died Bangkok 1957.

Hi, Robert Larimore Pendleton's photos are often in Chanthaburi cafes, one in particular of a boatman with the gothic style Catholic cathedral in the background I've seen poster-size in the old Chantaboon riverside community.Quote:

Other than the notes that he received this award I couldn't locate any information around it - guessing these weren't given out often to foreigners?, aware he dedicated much of his life and career to Siam/Thailand but receiving such a title wouldn't have been so common. Thanks.

This is the one mentioned in previous post. Notable as it shows the cathedral with it's spires which were removed during WWII supposedly as they could make a target for allied bombers, and not reinstated until 2009, so until that time most people had never seen the 'complete' cathedral.

Eduard Josef Gübelin (1913 – 2005) was a Swiss gemstone researcher. Eastern Thailand was the world’s major ruby source between the early 1960s and the 1990s, when political issues in Burma shut down supply from that country.

French occupation of Trat and Chanthaburi which began in 2011 and I've updated occasionally.
RL Pendleton photographed in this area in 1930s, Eduard Gubelin here for gem mining in 1969.

King Rama III (1788–1851) decided to build a chedi of huge dimensions inside Wat Saket, but the chedi collapsed during construction because the soft soil of Bangkok could not support the weight. Over the next few decades, the abandoned mud-and-brick structure acquired the shape of a natural hill and was overgrown with weeds. The locals called it ‘phu khao’ (hill/mountain), as if it was a natural feature.
During the reign of his half-brother King Rama IV, the construction continued by adding a small chedi on the hill. The project was completed early in the reign of his son, King Rama V (1853–1910). The surrounding concrete walls were added in the 1940s to stop the hill from eroding. The image of ‘Phu Khao Thong (Golden Mount)’ started to manifest.

Hung was originally established in 1892 in the reign of King Rama V. This original photo was taken in reign of King Rama VI (on the throne: 1910-1925).

The colorized B&W photo courtesy of ‘Page Siam Colorization by Noomrattana’ shows Asura Paksi barge. This barge was made in the reign of King Rama I (late 1700s). It was renewed in the reign of King Rama IV (late 1800s) and has been included in the Royal Barge Procession. The barge, actually less important in the procession, is called an escort barge. The bows of this type of barges are mostly decorated with figureheads of mythical creatures. Other types have less elaborate design.
The Asura Paksi barge has the bow that resembles a half-bird (= paksi) - half-ogre (= asura) figurehead with green body in a purple (front) and green (back) coat.

Such tattoo portrays the image of a real man which attracts ladies. From waist down, black ink was used and from waist up, red ink was used.
