Outback pubs reopen, giving Birdsville policeman a break from pizza delivery
It was the police house-call everyone in Birdsville welcomed —Senior Constable Stephan Pursell turning up with lights flashing and siren sounding to deliver pizzas on a pan-handle, during the coronavirus lockdown.
When you are the only cop on a Queensland beat the size of Britain, you learn to be adaptable.
"I was kept quite busy," Senior Constable Pursell said, delivering up to 50 pizzas one night from the Birdsville Hotel in Queensland's far south-west, which has been providing a takeaway service during the lockdown.
It was a bit of fun, and also a way for the police officer to check that residents were doing OK.
