    Rushing Into 17th Century!

Saudi Arabia to abolish flogging - supreme court

Image caption:The flogging of blogger Raif Badawi led to an international outcry. Saudi Arabia is to abolish flogging as a form of punishment, according to a legal document seen by media outlets.

The directive from the Gulf kingdom's Supreme Court says flogging will be replaced by imprisonment or fines.
It says this is an extension of human rights reforms brought by King Salman and his son, the country's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia has been criticised over the jailing of dissidents, and the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

    • Campaigners say Saudi Arabia has one of the worst records for human rights in the world, with freedom of expression severely curtailed and critics of the government subject to what they say is arbitrary arrest.

    'Bad image'

The last time that flogging in Saudi Arabia hit the headlines was in 2015 when blogger Raif Badawi was subjected to the punishment in public, reportedly after being convicted of cybercrime and insulting Islam.

He had been due to receive 1,000 lashes in weekly beatings but global outrage and reports that he nearly died put a stop to that part of his sentence.

BBC Arab affairs editor Sebastian Usher says it was clearly bad for Saudi Arabia's image.
Now, the practice looks like it will be done away with entirely.

But waves of arrests of every type of dissident under the king and the crown prince - including of women's rights campaigners - undercut this claim, our reporter says.

Earlier on Friday, the most prominent Saudi human rights campaigner died in jail after a stroke which fellow activists say was due to medical neglect by the authorities.
Majestically enthroned amid the vulgar herd

What is Islam coming to? Abolishing flogging is the thin edge of the wedge. Next thing woman will expect rights and men will no longer be allowed to even bash them. Then what, the abolition of stonnings and beheadings? Islam is going to shit.

True, but unfortunately Islam is becoming more conservative elsewhere, especially in traditionally 'moderate' Islamic countries - Malaysia (Kelantan), Indonesia (Aceh and much more), Brunei etc ... to name a few in the region alone.

The problem is that dissent or questioning the Qur'an or leading people's or imam's interpretation is pretty much a no-no - and it also speaks volumes that women being allowed to drive is heralded as something akin to a miracle and liberalism

...disagree: there are "4 schools of thought" (at least) within Islam, suggesting that not everyone agrees with one imam's interpretation...I imagine other "schools of thought" will emerge over time that allow for adjustments to modern society...much as Mormon leadership receives "dreams" from their god that certain verboten practices are now ok as long as your underwear is on tight...

Flogging replaced by increased arrests. One step forward, three steps back.

My only question to you re your post would be how and who can decide the time is there to 'overthrow' the system?

You can't go out in public and make fun of Allah, create works of 'art' like Jesus/Mohammad in urine, burn a Qur'an etc...

The timing of this is interesting.

MBS is on the brink of buying a football club in the UK, and the human rights record of his country has been very much in the spotlight.

...the recent "Arab Spring" answers that: when downtrodden Arabs are tired of chafing under the boot of the local dictator and death is no deterrent to action (see Tunisia and Syria), political foment results...and is usually and efficiently squashed into a bloody puddle...Islam has little effect on all that as there is a Qur'anic interpretation for every occasion...

Very true. We have quite a large Persian group of friends and acquaintances in Malaysia (one of the few countries that doesn't require a visa for Iranian passport holders) and certainly prefer their very open interpretation . . which includes alcohol and pork.

Of course. Quite right, my mistake. The fact it's an Islamic country is purely coincidental. They're quite nice chaps really. How is that planned trip to Mecca with your boyfriend going? Apparently Saudis hate gays. If chased you can find refuge in the nearest Mosque. Just introduce your BF to the Imam. I'm sure he'll give you refuge from those nasty Saudis. He'll probably even give you a tour of the local stoning pit.

...You should have stopped there...long before Islam and even to the present day, Saudi Arabia is and has been a tribal society...many tribal customs that don't quite fit with the usual (4-school) Muslim interpretations were incorporated unquestioningly into the Saudi version Islam.

Thus, dearest Cow, your ignorance exposed, feel free to continue grazing in the fields of your lord...

I'm surprised that this got the headline and not the fact that they've abolished the death penalty for minors....

Added: I see there was a day between the announcements, which explains it.

Your 'thinking' is so obviously muddled it's pretty clear help would be futile.

You think you're posting something sharply sarcastic.

In fact you're actually underlining the point you think you're taking issue with.

Try a bit more bread with the wine...

This article is about Saudi Arabia, and obviously Saudi Arabia is hugely influential throughout the Islamic world due to their: major Islamic sites, their wealth - they spread their version of the religion throughout the world, the spending is in the billions of $$$, Saudi has a closer relationship with the US than most other major Islamic nations (Iran, Eqypt, Turkey, etc).

Syria was a relatively progressive country that had sharia law as one of the influences on their legal system, so is in no way comparable to Saudi.

There are many forms and interpretations of Islam, but Saudi is a massive influence over a very large part of the Islamic world - much of the conservative globally that PH talked about has been systematically funded by the Saudis for decades. So, yes, they are linked.

He's right. You frequently make no substantive point whatsoever. Those of us who generally respond become inured to it, but above you see a fresh pair of eyes noticing it and still finding it novel enough to point out.

These are the things you apparently consider to be insights, but they are unsullied by any actual wisdom, knowledge or really anything to ponder whatsoever.

Cyrille, less of the "we", you are the most disiked poster on TD year upon year for many reasons - the main one is you say nothing, you just bitch. I see you think you've found a new little crowd to run with, you are pathetic. You're just a knut, no hope for you.

Tom is behaving strangely - he starts a post in the lounge, adds an incendiary title then starts arguing with anybody who replies in a way that doesn't suit his personal flavour. It's becoming like a little cult which is so boring to most posters that they only post on building, cooking and the like where you lot either avoid or can be ignored by and large. How many posters actually choose to engage in threads nowadays? Half a dozen on most threads, at best.

I'll just join the masses that avoid fukwits like Cyrille and any thread he's on...

& Tom, my post was pretty clear to anybody who has any experience of the Middle East, the world, you obnoxious twat...
