Well, there are two trips - one is mandatory (if you can afford it), the haj. The other one is the 'little haj', called umrah. It's not a replacement for the haj, rather wealthier people go several times to 'cleanse' and 'connect'.

Correct, Haj is also only available once per yer, and therefore difficult to get in as they use a lottery system for choosing who can attend.

Umrah is offered all the other times, and while doesnt count for attending Haj, is an attractive plan b for many.
