I need a lawnmower but I don't want to spend a million baht.

We've dumped 20 truck loads of good quality earth on the land followed by 200KGs of fertilizer.
5 lovely little ladies have worked their sweet little buts off for the last 4 days.

The next thing is the grass seed.

It's all been very economical and the the next job is grass seed, or not. She says not.
    Whatever, we'll need a mower.
    Fucking expensive.

Quality Hondas run at at around 15,000. Too much,.

Given the fact I know nothing about such machines any advice would be good.

    Second hand, excellent.

    Any offers?

15k THB sounds reasonable, electric ones can be as low as 5,000 THB but they are a bit shit

Buy a Honda! yes they are more expensive - but they last - they also use a lot less fuel than the cheaper models, you can get cheaper models that have Honda engines.

I used to have a Briggs n Stratton 4 stroke on a Victa Chassis ... eventually died.

Replaced it with an electric mower ... works fine, powerfull enough. CHEAP

The electric cord takes a bit of planning and the catcher is a bit smaller then the old mower.

Would love a battery mower, but they are expensive

Go and check again if the 4 day ladies have really made it flat. You need flat lawn for a mower. Have they used a peice of 2x8 on a string and dragged it all over the plot, twice?

How big an area you gonna mow? What type of grass? 20 truck loads sounds like a descent size plot. Mowing that with an electric seems odd. You would have to lug around a huge cord.

Get a Honda or Husky in BKK. Money well spent. Make sure it has at least front drive wheels so you aren't killing yourself pushing it. 15 to 20k baht is the going price for a good one with a nice size rear bag. Of course you could find someone to do it for you, but they aren't likely going to have a mower, they will use a blade on a weedwhacker and take it all the way down to the roots and the lawn will die. One of those "Get what you pay for" deals...

A bush-cutter works better on uneven ground and you can buy a good one at a reasonable price on Lazada

What a crock of shit this statement is. If your "lawn" is not flat then set your mower on the lowest level and cut the high points off, or if the valley is too deep throw some dirt in the fill it a bit. Over time the lawn will grow and it will have a bit of character instead of looking "manicured", unless of course that is what you want.

    JPPR is correct re:
"Get what you pay for" as I found out.
When we moved to Thailand we bought a lawnmower with us from Australia it is a Victa 60 and worked a treat, it was a mulcher/catcher mower. Eventually it gave up working and instead of having it repaired I went and bought another mower this time a Makita 150cc mulcher catcher here in Thailand, it was also a mulcher and worked really well, can't remember what it cost. Anyway one day it decided to stop working so as I needed to cut the grass I couldn't wait to get it fixed and went and bought another mower this time I went cheap and bought a small 99cc mower. Unfortunately it only works well if the grass is short and growing thinly, if it gets a bit long and is thick the mower stalls as it isn't powerful enough. It cost me 5K and was a waste of money. Maybe it would be OK if you are like pragmatic and mow your grass every 5 days but I can't be stuffed doing that so it usually is like a jungle before I get into cutting it.

Finally I went and got my Makita fixed and it is going strong at the moment. Both the Victa and the Makita have Briggs and Stratton engines which I think are great.

    So my advice is:
Don't worry about whether your lawn is "flat" and spend the money and buy a mower that has some power i.e. at least 150cc motor. Again JPPR's advice on spending a bit ,more and getting one that is self driven would be well worth following.

Yeah I forgot about cc's ootai. 150cc is good power to cover it. You can cut through tall thick grass with a good sharp blade with no bog down as long as you don't have the deck height set at ground level. . Also having it be a mulcher is great as on my back forty area I just mow and mulch. Only the front lawns do I bag it and take away to spread it out.

My Husky which I brought from the states is a front direct drive and man I will tell you its a life saver....What I mean by that is, because it will pull you along my wife gladly mows the lawns. If it wasn't I would be stuck with it forever..

Why break your back in 40 degree heat when you can get a Thai peasant and his mates with their own tools to do it for a few beer chang?

Or is this lawnmower for the wife?

Firstly Dil beer Chang is worth its price in Gold currently with the Alcohol ban

Secondly I doubt anyone mows grass during summer and most certainly not at 2pm. I mow mine at about 7pm with a cocktail in hand because my mower is self propelled.

Thirdly, yes it's for the wife....

Are you havin a laarrff? Where the fcuk can I find a Thai guy with his own tools/grass-cutter to cut my Rai, or so, of lawn for a few beers? I'd bet I'd be hard pushed to find a guy even if I were to pay him and provide the fcuking mower. And do you think I'd let Somchai loose with my 25,000 Baht Honda power driven mower? He'd fcuk it up after 10 minutes.

I paid 3000 baht a Month for a guy and his family to clean the pool and do all the garden 3 times a week. He even killed a few snakes, one being a Burmese python, the bastard

And that was in Pattaya, not out in the sticks with Thais living off 1000 baht a Month there working families send them.

Theres ten million unemployed Thais up there now. I doubt it would be hard to find labour. Bet theres a shit load of hot chicks back from Pattaya and Bangkok gogos too thatd be up for a bit of pruning

I now live out in the sticks, when I lived in Pattaya easy to find people to do "garden" work - up here forget it, if they had any "go" in them they would have long gone to find a decent paying job - worthless bunch!

I agree, easier to find gardening services in bigger metropolitan areas. You get out in rural areas and finding someone to do any work usually costs more money and the quality of work done is marginal at best. Plus they see the "Whitey" and the fee went up 30% probably. I used to do my perimeter hedges 3 times a year. A neighbor guy does them when I do not want to. He trims them up very nice for 1500 bht. Takes him a few days. Other then that I do all my own work which is why I buy better tools that work. why make the job 2 times harder with cheap tools.

This is why I said, just cough up the baht and buy a good mower. You will thank yourself later plus you might enjoy doing the job.

The only smart thing to do. One good mower will last you 10 years with just normal upkeep..

Is it not better to have even earth for a lawn close to your home? Don't you want to be able to play a spot of cricket with an even pitch?

Crackerjack, please let us know what you decide to buy. I am looking at lawnmowers also and the Baht 15K you mention doesn't get a Honda from the local suppliers, just some brand I have never heard of. Maybe I should look on Lazada.
I guess Isan isn't big on lawns. The gf gives me the 'mad farang' exasperated look every time I talk about turning some of our jungle into lawn. The local philosophy seems to be: If you can't eat it, why plant it?
