    Grog Gone !!!!

In 10 years up here I've never know the Mom & PoP shops not sell grog, beer or Lao kau.

Even the main bottle shop in the village run by the Sargent of the local Police has never been shut.

    Now they are!
The little family shops, the main shop, the lot.

The Lao Kao distiller and his son have been arrested.

    Chaos reigns.

Apparently this started at around 10.00 this A.M running through to the end of the month.

So, if you've got a source it might be worth while stocking up.

Cold water is refreshing. Cold milk is good. Fresh fruit juice can give you many alternatives.

There is almost nothing anywhere. My local mom and pop sold out a while ago. Missus contacted her sister who lives a few miles away to get a couple of bottles of the hard stuff. They picked that up, and told us that the next customer bought the entire remaining stock.

Do like the Polish do... Get a loaf of unsliced bread, rip in half and pour meths/ hand sanitiser through it which will filter it.

    Here's some I made earlier

Storekeepers and possibly Fishlocker and Snubby's old faithful...

    With the old bread trick....

Torpedo juice is American slang for an alcoholic beverage, first mixed in World War II, made from pineapple juice and the 180-proof grain alcohol fuel used in United States Navy torpedo motors.[1] Various poisonous additives were mixed into the fuel alcohol by Navy authorities to render the alcohol undrinkable, and various methods were employed by the U.S. sailors to separate the alcohol from the poison. Aside from the expected alcohol intoxication and subsequent hangover, the effects of drinking torpedo juice sometimes included mild or severe reactions to the poison, and the drink's reputation developed an early element of risk.

In the first part of the Pacific War, U.S. torpedoes were powered by a miniature steam engine burning 180- or higher-proof ethyl alcohol as fuel. The ethyl alcohol was denatured by the addition of 5–10% "pink lady", a blend of dye, methanol and possibly other ingredients. Methanol causes blindness when ingested, and cannot be made non-poisonous. The methanol was said to be (largely) removed by filtering the fuel mix through a compressed loaf of bread.

Later, a small amount of Croton oil was added to the neutral grain spirits which powered U.S. torpedoes. Drinking alcohol with the oil additive caused painful cramps, internal bleeding and a violent emptying of the bowels. It was intended as a replacement for methanol which had caused blindness in some sailors. To avoid the Croton oil, sailors devised crude stills to slowly separate the alcohol from the poison, as alcohol evaporated at a lower temperature than Croton oil. The stills were sometimes called 'Gilly' stills, and the resulting potable alcohol was known as 'gilly'.[2]

With the introduction of the electric powered U.S. Mark 18 torpedo, ethyl alcohol was no longer required for torpedoes; however, limited quantities of denatured alcohol were (and are) still required by the Electrician's Mates and Interior Communications Electricians on board ship for the purpose of cleaning slip rings, commutators, and carbon brushes on a wide variety of equipment.

The standard recipe for torpedo juice is two parts ethyl alcohol and three parts pineapple juice.

Home-brewers take note: you can make beer out of vegemite, but it's going to taste awful.

Man, that is bad bad news. I suggest locating one of the old fossils whose blood is probably 80 per cent proof, and going Dracula on his ass.

I think it was TC. Anyone remember, I'd like to revisit that thread and make some wine.
I got some preservative free apple juice today. Will that make cider?

...for large quantities of homemade wine:

    What you need:

12 bottles preservative-free, no sugar added red grape juice (any fruit juice will do...I used Rauch)
12 bottles of finest tap water
    1 kilo granulated sugar
1 packet of yeast (started in a 1/2 cup of warm water and a pinch of sugar for an hour or so)

    What you do:

    a. Pour juice into 50-75 liter plastic container
    b. fill empty bottles with water
    c. boil water, add sugar: stir til sugar melts
    d. dump sugar water into plastic container
    e. add remaining bottles of water to plastic container
    f. add slightly foaming yeast to container, stir.
    g. cover, leave undisturbed for 30 days, ignore smell
    h. decant as desired, but I normally waited 60 days to improve bouquet
    i. I had 2 vats on the go: red and rose...by the time the red had been consumed, the rose was ready: don't bother rinsing, just repeat...
