The cannot see the forest because of the trees thread.

I have been closely watching all the developments with regard to how this Covid 19 pandemic is being handled and I cannot help to feel that an immediate solution is possible if our so called global experts concentrated on an achievable solution now.

All these experts are spending all their efforts and vast amounts of taxpayer's money in an attempt to develop a vaccine and we all know this will take years to achieve with extreme doubt they will ever be successful. Most experts admit there is not at present a vaccine for the common cold.

I for one feel that all efforts should be concentrated on developing an anti-viral respiratory mask which will not only protect the wearer from contracting the virus but also prevent the wearer, who is Covid Virus positive, from transmitting the virus.

The Covid Virus dimensional foot print is between 70 & 90 nano-microns (0.07 - 0.09 microns) and what is needed is a filtration medium that can catch the virus as it passes through the membrane.

The present N95 mask, which is regarded as the best mask in the market, can filter 95% of air-borne particles but is just not good enough to achieve anti-viral wearer protection.

Also the N95 mask is extremely uncomfortable to wear and can only be used on 1 occasion.

I suggest all these global experts concentrate on the simplest achievable solution, create a global mask wearing society and then concentrate on the development of a vaccine when the world is operational again.

100's of thousands of people are dying at the moment, which is obviously distressing, but billions are suffering and things are getting worse on a daily bases.

I appreciate your thoughts both positive or negative. Cheers.

Shirley, they can develop both at the same time.

No point having your virologists sitting around twiddling their thumbs while the mask boffins are working on their part.

The people who have it cannot be trusted to be in public or to have washed their hands.

So that leaves the people who wear a mask for protection.

Feedback from a number of countries where the wearing of masks was common, and I am referring to years ago, show the level of influenza cases was dramatically was reduced.

I nominate where most Hong Kong residents wear a mask particularly on public transport.

PPE only works as designed if: the users are aware of it's purpose, the users are trained in it's use, proper donning and removal procedures are implemented and followed.

In a perfect world it could and probably would eliminate virtually all communicable diseases, however, it is not a perfect world. PPE at what cost and who would bear the cost?

Daily I see people (Thai's and Farangs) wearing masks, Kudo's to them.

But they lift them up to sneeze and cough............and go knuckle deep into a nostril seeking out a snack.

Yeahs masks is the answer !!!!!!

    Perhaps....a bit over sensationalized?

    Look at the comparative numbers.

I am particularly aware that a mask will only work correctly if properly designed. It must be positioned on the face and almost keyed into position to ensure a proper and airtight seal by anyone regardless of their experience with using masks.

    I love these challenges.

The design side is of course of key importance - making it as idiot proof as possible is a real challenge - may your efforts bring fruit - may concern is with getting the uneducated to utilize the instrument correctly. Especially in our USA's litigious society - I can see a lawsuit alleging failed design on the basis of how the unit is advertised. But, that is a marketing issue.

A good and useful design addressing know problems should and will be well received - from the marketing aspect, who or what is the targeted market and can the unit be produced at a reasonable cost, perform as advertised and, always of importance - be profitable?

Good luck with it. You have already got the project funding - always the most difficult part of the process. Enjoy the challenge.

    Exactly mate.

We have purchased some facial 3D imaging programs and will start to produce the proto-tpe tooling according to a general asian and caucasion facial profile meaning 2 sets of tools.

And the face mask body, which I hope we can guarantee for 12 months, will be reusable saving costs and waste. The compound of the mask body will be important and at present only physical testing and R&D will determine the correct mixture.

Good fun anyway and extremely interesting.

Really? You can generalise all Caucasians to one face type? and all Asians to one other? What about the Indians? And Africans? And Pacific Islanders?

    Good question.

We are looking at using a new malleable thermo-plastic rubber alloys which can stretch and take the shape of various profiles within reason.

I promise nothing at this stage but hope with proper testing and trial and error can achieve success.

Hope you have a good virology lab on standby. Ain't no way you are going to get that approved otherwise. You will need detailed, proven decontamination protocols in place.

There is a reason why they are designed to be disposable.

translation: we are using Windows Paint 3D and a do-it-yourself sewing kit using myself and Somchai as a fitting model for my old boxer shorts as the fabric

Yes we have the correct mechanisms in place well I hope so anyway.

Same group that approved my urine drug tester device so I have some history which does help!

    .
So you're using the same material they use in mouth guards which you dip in hot water and the bite on, and it sets to the exact shape you want ?

That would seem to be ideal, since even Caucasian people have a huge variety of facial shapes. You'll never get a perfect seal otherwise.
