    Art From Your Home

...anything interesting from your travels on your walls, floors, or coffee table?

    Art From Your Home-s__15220861-jpg

Art from spices: I asked a waiting artist outside an Addis Ababa church (1970) to recreate one of the icons inside (no photos allowed). All he needed was the number of the icon from a series of icons on the church walls to produce this...it's faded a bit now, of course, but I still admire his process of mixing spices with water and getting to work. In Amharic, this icon presents the Trinity (selassie-och: Haile Selassie translates to Power of the Trinity).
Majestically enthroned amid the vulgar herd

I bought Dona Gracia on canvas from the Jewish Ghetto in Venice for my wife's birthday a few years ago.

Great idea for a thread, tc. I bought so much art and unique pieces while abroad, but sadly I move around quite a bit and most of it is stored in my dad's basement. Which reminds me I have to get it soon. I do have two picture I keep around. This one reminded me of my day trip to Suzhou (bought there as well), China. It is done in needlepoint which is unique.

    ^^That is amazing!

^Ha, Chico! Do you collect foreign money?

Bought this off a road stall in Seoul, Korea. A jewlery box. I also bought three other ones for my family in different sizes.
It is mother of pearl on top, so they say.

^^ I was going to post this with the post but I am so pissed off with pics now I didn't but it deserves an explanation.

The painting is another Thanka from Nepal but less traditional. In 3 years in Nepal it was the only picture I ended up with. I grew to know a few families in Bhaktapur outside Kathmandu which is car-less and badly affected by the last earthquake but is a centre for artisans. The painting was painted by a novice painter, the son of one of the families I grew to know. He was a big fan of Udaipur Miniature painting, the picture he called "Many Buddhas" and he was 13 but would not tell me how long it took to paint. The picture (main one is 1 1/2 ft wide by 2 high. The close ups cover approx 2-3 inches to give you an idea of the detail. Sorry about the shit camera work but hopefully you get the idea.

The picture is so special to me not because its amazing for a 13 YO but also because he developed a serious blood disorder and this was a gift, he painted it for his mother. In Nepal there is little social support, he required 16 blood transfusions over 6 months and many drug treatments. The family were not rich, the cost of the transfusions had to be borne by them and after 2 treatments they were already borrowing. I paid the lot and he's 28 now married and has 2 children - the gift is a constant reminder of the fragility of life and how lucky I am – cheesy maybe. Seeing him on deaths door for basically three months before things started to change was harrowing and I know how special the picture was to his mother but it was given to me as a thank you, I refused it because I knew how much she cherished it but it somehow got packed in my packing sent back to the UK, note attached which is now included in the inside of the back board.

What does it mean? One of my most treasured possessions and the note will remain secret until someone opens it.

^ you aren't pissed its just shite camera work, each of those zooms is about 2-3 inches square and i know it must have taken him ages, 13 YO... he did the work after school and after his painting lessons as an apprentice following school so not much time in the days he could do it and beg the paint for it, before his mum expected him back on an evening - i reckon you are looking at 4 months or more. staggering.

...hand-blown glass aftabeh (water jug) from Esfahan, Iran. In pre-revolutionary times, the local university's art department was trying to revive Indian-influenced Islamic art with artisans imported from India. Abundant local talent produced items like this...

Picked this up from s street seller in Rio many years ago... nothing special but I just liked the colours.

From Fremantle WA, I think the artist was aboriginal. The colours again... the redness of the outback framed by the white gums.

From Pointe Noire, Congo... another street seller. Painted in sand, but I have no idea how. I've never got round to getting this one framed.

    ^ Beautiful... is it old?

Reminds me of some 17th century Chinese porcelain I have from a shipwreck off Vung Tau, Vietnam. I did some work with a salvage hunter many years ago (but sadly not on that project) and he sold me a few pieces cheap.

Unfortunately it's still in storage in Australia so no pic,... you've reminded me I really need to sort this stuff out.

...I have no way of knowing, although I did ask a ceramicist to take a look. He was intrigued by the glaze and wondered what type of clay was used, but couldn't estimate the age. I found this item in an Iranian family's storeroom in Kashan: they were anxious to get rid of "old stuff" and were delighted when I bought several pieces...(to be displayed here).
