    DIY Masks

The CDC now says all Americans should wear masks — here’s a simple DIY approach

Published: April 5, 2020 at 7:50 a.m. ETBy Elisabeth Buchwald

When you can’t buy a mask, make it yourself

On Friday, President Donald Trump announced that the “CDC is advising the use of non-medical cloth faced covering as an additional voluntary public health measure.” Trump himself said he does not plan on wearing a face mask.
“The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N95 respirators,” U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams added on Friday. “Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders.”
But even flimsier disposable masks can be hard to find. Luckily, there are quick and easy ways craft your own.
Dispatches from a pandemic: ‘Would you risk your life for a bagel?’ I went to the grocery store in a balaclava in the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. — turns out, De Blasio now says all New Yorkers should wear homemade masks

Here’s what you need to know about DIY masks:
    • These masks aren’t going to fully protect you from coronavirus. You should still be practicing social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from others in public and frequently washing your hands for 20 seconds each time.
Don’t “get an artificial sense of protection,” Deborah Birx, a public health expert and a leader of the White House’s coronavirus response team, said Thursday. “Remember, your eyes are not in the mask, so if you’re touching things and then touching your eyes, you’re exposing yourself in the same way.”
    • A DIY mask, while not as effective as an N95 mask, still offers some protection from respiratory droplets that spread the virus.
    • Fabric that is 100% cotton is comparable to surgical masks in effectiveness.
    • If you can’t make your own mask, the New York City Department suggests covering your mouth and nose with a scarf or bandanna.

Here’s what you need to make the mask in 10 minutes, and a video demonstration via YouTube:
    • Clean flat bed sheet with side hems (100% cotton, tight weave)
    • Scissors
    • Measuring tape (or an 8.5-inches-by-11 piece of paper to approximate)
    • Large paper clip (or other malleable metal strip like floral wire or pipe cleaner) to make the nose pinch.
    • Safety pins (or stapler)

I just thought I'd throw this out there. I know for me, I use a bandana, as there are no masks available anywhere. I think I'll try this idea in the vid. Welcome to try it yourself.

In the name of social safety and recycling, I have sent off to Japan for some used underwear to make face masks.

That's a DiY mask in my avatar. Courtesy of the women of Joann Fabric.

Doesn't have a nose pinch though.

I went to a pharmacy earlier for masks, they had packs of 4 clearly printed 10 bt on the wrapper, at 100 bt. No thanks, I have some at home and was looking for a few extra so no big deal for me, but lots of people out there simply cannot afford 100 bt.

Tbf since I wouldn't know, 100 could be the farang gouge price with Thais paying the regular 10 bt, and if so it's comforting to know that not all Thais are racist cnuts.

To hide their stupidity. Agreed. They lack a joined up health care system. Masks cannot hide inherent flaws, or lack of common sense.

In PI, the surgical masks were sold at 5 pesos each, way back late January when I bought some (that was when they announced the first case of covid here). I don't know if price has increased by now, but many pharmacies & supermarkets with signs saying "no more face masks".

I have surgical masks, cloth mask and 1 N95 mask. The N95 was bought for the volcano ashfall/ debris in early January. I'm not using it now - reserving it for tougher times. I bought the N95 at 85 pesos in early January (colleague knew a supplier and our group bought 1 box of N95s and divided it among ourselves). In February, we wanted to buy more. Colleague contacted the supplier, and said that it was now priced at 145 pesos per mask. By then, several parts of China were on lockdown and it was harder for the supplier to get stock. Later we were told by the supplier that they had no more supplies for private individuals because they were taken by the govt (for hospital staff).

There are some vendors of cloth masks near the wet markets / supermarkets. The sellers are usually on a cart/bike or tricycle. They're allowed to sell since masks are considered essential.

The govt has mandated wearing masks if going outside, especially in crowded areas.

Masks should really be reserved for those in healthcare roles. As the virus is more readily contagious from touch, as opposed to coughs and sneezes. It protects the recipient of your sputum rather than you, where the virus is much less effective. It’s may be a useful precaution if you think you might have the virus. Most people don’t so masks are a bit superfluous, except in cases described above.
The paper ones don’t last long in humid, tropical environments anyway.

And the stupidity of the President mostly.

Trump refuses to wear a mask, but his wife Melania thinks it is very important.

Trump isn't sending any 3M masks to Canada either, or anywhere else for that matter.

The price is actually government controlled at 2.5 baht per mask. Big fines for those gouging.

Pretty much what the upated advice from the WHO is after a review:

No need for healthy to wear face masks, says WHO after review | World news | The Guardian

The amount of people I've seen repeatedly taking their masks off to talk, eat, wipe crumbs from their face, readjust etc beggars belief. They definitely can do more harm than good to those who don't quite understand how the virus is spread.
