Covid - Today, and after the Fact - What are you doing?

A bit of a different spin on Covid,

What are you doing to prepare yourself and your family for what will happen?

Now, as nobody knows what is actually going to happen, what steps have you taken to protect yourself and your family from potential damage? Medical, financial, emotional?

Today, tomorrow, next month, 3 months out?

For myself, short-term. Purchased face masks and hand sanitizer. Stocked up on our normal stock of supplies, basically doubled our usual stock. Withdrew two months of cash for expenses (doubled). And we have cut back on travel and entertainment excursions. Put longer term travel plans on hold.

Haven’t changed anything investment wise. Nest egg dropped by a good 15% in value but that’s on paper only. Number of shares owned remains the same.

As retirees we are in the enviable position of being fairly well insulted. This proverbial “shit-hitting-the-fan” event is, for us, basically a non-participant spectator event.

A great deal of panic reporting – as always happens. Some of it will occur, how bad it’s going to get is anybody’s guess. The list is long.

In your best guess – where will you be, and in what shape, a year from today?

For us, we will be right here, relatively untouched by this event and the series of events that will follow. Dominos…

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and input.

We are in lockdown in BGC in Manila.

We cannot travel outside the national capital region and are only supposed to go out onto the streets if we are getting groceries, medical supplies or other emergency needs.

We went out yesterday to get some groceries and the place is a bit apocalyptic. All businesses in this usually thriving community are closed (except for a few of those essential services)

There was no panic buying at the grocery store though and most items seemed to still be in stock.

Who knows what it might be like if the lockdown continues for a number of months though.

    Nothing.
No one truly understands the problem, so the varied solutions on offer are resource based, depending on the resources available to any particular country.
Individuals can have so little impact on the outcome, it’s not worth getting excited about. Unless of course, you believe all the government and media hype and start to panic.

This virus is only significant because it is global and does not recognise borders. Apart from that, it will kill fewer people than Thai road accidents, until its stopped.
Calm the fuck down and carry on jogging. Get ready for the post virus recession, created by media hype.

Nothing has changed for me, apart from wearing an N95 mask when in the supermarket, and washing my hands if I touch a surface in that shop.

I'm currently teaching about the 'Wuhan' virus (let's not forget the origin/reasons for this virus), to many of my online science students. In comparison to the daily deaths from other diseases (see chart), and the even larger number of people who die every day from heart attack, stroke etc, this virus is insignificant.

For now, Life is relatively the same for us however just more aware of our surroundings. We live somewhat remote and have plenty of supplies. I am now working 100% remote. What will this be like in 3 months, If about the same as today, then same comments.

Far too many unknowns to make an assessment but plans are to be doing our thing, whatever that is. I have to say I much prefer being here in Thailand versus the US right now.

This will die down. Keep yourself locked away for 6 weeks. Most will venture back out there after the 14 days and catch it off the young Thai chickenhead and essential workers. Give yourself another Month after that for all thos3 on the second wave to recover.

No panic here, just regular shopping which includes stocking up on toiletries esp the two-pack Johnsons Baby soap when available, shampoo, toothpaste/brushes etc, loads of water, UHC coconut juice and nam daeng, peanut butter, Heritage prunes, pistachios, Brooks baked beans and olive oil but all of those are also usual, stuck on a two-week supply of bread because still haven't got around to buying a freezer but it's only been 9 months so it's on the shortlist, and last I looked we're down to about a half dozen bog rolls but that's no cause for concern because I have faith in our glorious leaders to keep us well supplied.

Just heard that the open / wet markets are being closed here in LoS. Forcing people to use enclosed and air-conditioned supermarkets (benefiting the usual toadying conglomerates). Probably creating shortages and panic-buying..

Yes, that chart is from about 10 days ago. I'm well aware of that. I'm also well aware that the number of Wuhan virus deaths has increased since that date, but are still totally insignificant when compared to other causes of death.

I'm also aware that all of us will die from something..... I'm also aware that most (I think this is correct) of those who have died from this virus were diabetic, overweight or with heart disease, medical conditions which for the most part are entirely avoidable.

It makes absolute sense to try to minimise the spread of this virus. Perhaps we can also ban Thais from driving cars. That would also reduce the stats for unnecessary deaths.

That is because the virus has only just started to spread. So far 244k people have been infected of those 10k have died. In the US between 36-51 million caught the flu 22-55k died. Your comparison is not only flawed but stupid. If as many people caught covid millions of people would die.

And???? We are not immortal. By all means, take actions to minimise the spread of this Wuhan virus. But we are all going to die of something. In many cases, such as with heart disease, stroke AND also Wuhan virus, we have increased the chances of dying from this illness by failing to look after our own body (eg lack of exercise, unhealthy diet etc).

Of course, there are also the unlucky who will die of an illness that would not normally kill a healthy person.

What I can personally do is to continue to live a healthy life and to take steps to minimise the risk of either catching this virus, or of passing it on to others. If this virus does kill millions of people, what do you want me to do?
