Are they worth it?
the air up here is shit.
I'm tempted to get an air cleaner device for the bedroom at least.
Or will A/C systems perform the same function
any suggestions?

Worth it to me, we have two in the house that have been running 24/7 for a year now, filters last around 3 months. We also use "filtrete" in the AC filters, that needs changing every couple of months, AC on its own will not clean the air adequately, depending on how bad it is polluted off course, ours isn't that bad, nothing like CM.
The filters have a digital readout so can see the pollution in the air, can be quite shocking at times, mornings usually the worse!
^^ Hughcow is probably your got to on Aircon as he worked in the industry. I think some of the modern models have electrostatic elements and better cleaning properties.
We have a Sharp air purifier but do not use it all the time. Only when air is reported as moderate or worse. We also only us it at night as we tend to be busy outside during the day so doesn't make sense to run it all the time. It is a nice unit. Has digital readout. Also has feature as a room humidifier.
Also, many new AC units are pretty effective. They have HEPA filters and electrostatic features.
Worth it to me, pretty much everyone here in UB has one. In winter if I forget to put it on I have a pretty dry throat and cough in the morning, so it must be doing something. Mine is by MI and has a built in AQI monitor with screen, it is sometimes alarming what it reads first thing when it is turned on but it drops fairly quickly.
^Agreed. I have not looked into it much. Read a few brochures.
I think as Syb said, it won't hurt to have combination or Aircon with reasonable air cleaning ability and separate Air Purifier and they aren't expensive.
