Kota Kinabalu Fish and Fruit Market

I'm lucky to have work in Sabah several times a year - easily my favourite place in Malaysia - and the usual place to go for evening meals is this place.

The seafood is as fresh as can be and the fruit . . . brilliant.

It's right on the waterfront, opposite the Le Meridien . . . just walk out and over the road . . .

You walk around, choose the food you want, they cook it for you as per your wish or their suggestions and off you go.

I just had to have a durian and some rambutan . . . took them to the place I decided on for dinner

I ended up having three massive prawns bbq'd, one fish also bbq'd with garlic and chilli (not too spicy), a dozen scallops and my favourite veg here - fern tips in garlic

Have I mentioned that this is my favourite place?

Tomorrow my client is taking me to lunch . . . to the best lobster joint in town . . . and it's not expensive.

My dinner of fish, prawns, scallops, fern tips and two coconuts came to RM50 - roughly 370 baht with the durian and rambutan another 50 baht

    Brilliant.

Why is Sabah your fave place in Malaysia PH? I get the idea it's more than just the seafood.

    Many reasons, sabang.

The people here are very easy to work with, straightforward and different from the mainland. They all share in this inherent love of their state - which requires 'mainland' Malaysians to go through passport control when entering and doesn't allow for them to settle in Sabah (or Sarawak).
Also, the majority population is Kadazan-Dusun, indigenous tribes - which means the Malays are in the minority, hence Islam is not the majority religion . . . which keeps everyone nicely grounded.

It's a simply beautiful place and I work with the various tourism-related ministries at times, so I get to go and see all the amazing places on offer.

Whether it's Sipadan, Mount Kinabalu, Tunku Abdul Rhaman Marine Nature Reserve or anywhere else - brilliant.

Plus it now has the added bonus of no China visitors as Sabah was the first place to stop flights from China. They used to fly in like locusts

Excellent pics PH! A bit of friendly advice. Next time uncheck the box underneath that says "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" that will keep your pics full sized.

Problem with doing it that way is that they might change to something like the dashboard of Mendip's car.

Better to keep 'reference locally' checked and double click to the desired size before posting.

Looks good, will have to visit this market one day. Ordering and cooking onsite is an attractive option.

Flights are quite cheap now, hotels are as well. Sabah is covid-19 free and the people are far nicer than on the mainland and it is mainland Chinese-free as well

We drilled some wells offshore Sabah in the late seventies, we were located ~5 miles offshore with views of Mount Kinabulu, got to see the sunsets every morning, crew changed in KK, good memories.

Been to KK a few times. Very nice city and, like PH says, the locals are vey cool. We had a few big sessions with the locals that dragged on until early morning.

Hire a car and drive to the Mount Kinabalu area...check out the memorials for the Sandakan death march and chill out in the hot springs. The jungle is also incredible if you're into hiking.

I was there a couple years ago. I ordered this because I didn't know what it was. Thought it was worth a try. Turned out to be like chewing on an old tyre. Anyone know what it is?

When I was there it was full of busloads of Chinese tourists walking around in their cutoff tops and short-shorts totally oblivious to the local customs. And for a couple of days there was an American carrier parked offshore. Loads of short-haired young men in freshly ironed civilian clothes trying their hardest to not look like military.
Some people think it don't, but it be.
