Thread: Are you stocking up in preparation for a positive Corona pandemic ?

We live way out bush and due to my innate boredom I follow the news quite a bit.
It seems clear that the Thai authorities haven't a clue or at best are not giving out factual results.
So, it seems to me to make sense to stock up on all the necessaries to cover us for a couple of months.
Why not, we've got freezers and so on?
You buy a bunch of stuff and store it.
If things get difficult and we need to avoid hitting the supermarkets and markets in general so be it.
I've got 2 little kids (aged 1 and 5 ) to care for plus my own Immune system is fucked.
So, I reckon a bit of a stock up and stay home with the TV and teaching the kids is the way to spend the time.

Your view?

^ J&J it can't hurt, i now have 3 months supply of beer and whine, always seem to have enough food to get through the same amount of time. Its like the floods in BKK some years back and i said to the Mrs why not stock up you'll use it so no loss but you'll be fuk'd if things went south - me i just always think prepare for the worst and hope for the best, done so all my life.

Tune in to the Kitchen subbie, Chitty has gone out and bought a whole wigwam full of tinned foods and given his usual kitchen flair you can expect some pretty imaginative offerings.

I'd say no need to stock up on anything the Thais can't export anything at present to china,so there going to be an abundance of fresh fruit meat and veg.

I don't think perishables are what you'd stock up on.

I've stocked up with nothing. However, if I had children then I'd take a different approach. The OP makes sense...

Yup, I really want to make sure we're covered for 3 months of kids stuff.
Plus a certain number of cases of Leo and perhaps a few boxes of 100 pipers.
It would seem to be sensible. We have the storage space, so why not.?

In your position it looks like a sensible option but the problem we all face is just how long this is going to burn. Sadly i think if is goes high saturation globally and given the positive re-tests its going to be difficult to avoid Ad infinitum. As i said i always prepare for the worst.

Children are the least affected. It is the old (starting from 60) and those with comorbidities who are most at risk.

Every year some 650,000 people die from common flu. There have been less than 3,000 reported deaths from covid-19.

If, if there is large scale community transmission, ok, maybe time to reassess. But there have been only 40 cases in Thailand, and the respective ministries have jumped on them. Schools closed, disinfected, quarantines, case tracking.

You are more likely to die in a RTA in Thailand than through infection with covid-19.

Indeed, fortunately we have some very good specialists who are personal friends in the Uk and Aus, so I'll be followed by them.
I think we'll be OK . The only big question is me going to Darwin via Singapore in mid April for a week. I've got insurance, for the first time so it should be OK.

I get what Nid says and yes compared to annual Flu and certain other annual bugs it is currently less globally fatal, however i had flu when i was 5 and it laid me out for 2 weeks and to the best of my knowledge i have not had it since (most people don't, just a bad cold). Flu hasn't hit me for most of my life and i took no precautions, this not the same and the worry within medical community is that it transmits sometimes without symptoms and fast, coupled with positive re-tests if means you cannot be easily assured of being clear and non-infectious off one test. Its not the same beast as flu. The worry is for old people and those like Jan who have depleted immune response. Not overly dramatic its just that this is a different beast to Flu.

Wife bought a dozen face masks. We wore them one day at the Mall. Been to the Mall a couple days since sans face masks.

If, and it is big "if". The corona virus becomes prevalent in Thailand or our province we will beef up on preventative measures.

May we'll hit the Mahidol Hospital Tropical Diseases Division for our annual vaccinations - we'll see what they have to say and take it from there.

Really unless you are 65+ or immune deficient and its become widespread all measures are waste of time you are just going to have to ride it.

You've got the lao khao place down the road....buy that and you can drink it and sanitize with it dirt cheap.

I would suggest vodka and tonics in case you need the quinine if the disease becomes born my the mozzies.

Went looking for surgical masks at Walgreens. The gal said they are all sold out. Three month wait at all stores and online.

Went to Menards and was told none there and it's slim pickings at some of the stores farther away. I didn't feel like driving for them so I went to the local Wall Mart and sure enough they had two two packs of the 3M dust masks. I want them because I'm doing some painting and plaster work. I was told at Menards some guy bought a whole pallet with the intent of gouging people on line as the fear of this virus spreads.

So yea, I stocked up the bunker with more canned goods ect as it doesn't hurt to have some extra stock on hand.

I passed on buying more assault riffles and ammunition as I have enough should this become the zombie apocalypse.

Just kidding. ....well not really.

Speaking of stocks what a ride it's been. Time to buy more now I figure but markets may drop lower of course as this is only the beginning here in the states.
