I like Portland- it's one of my fave US cities. Kind of got an almost Euro edge to it, compared to the freeway metropolis that is so many US cities. Loadsa weirdo's & strip clubs too- I wonder if the Backswing is still going? It's the sort of place that revels in it's own Bohemianism. Not a bad posting fella. Getting there, well jeez you are a big boy now. Connect via SF, LAX, or even HNL if Delta is just too damn painful.

Problem is, I have never flown Delta - most like would have booked it if not for the feedback here.

Portland is trying hard to be green and eco friendly, so getting around on public transport should be a breeze. Provided you can get over your distaste for shared travel. (I have the same problem). You could find yourself sat on a bus next to someone related to Cyrille.

    Think cosmopolitan, grown up hippies.

I hear its a North West version of Austin, Texas.
    Which is a compliment.
Arty farty, hippies, hipsters, Euro-fied, big music scene, big custom motorcycle scene.
    All good.

By the way - any specific reasons why Delta is considered to be crap? Poor aircraft, poor service?

Honestly not sure if I'd rather not fly on a low-budget Chinese Airline, or a Low-Budget American one.

I'd book Business Class or do a nice train ride for that leg.

well, sometimes you have no choice, and have to go with the worst route, no big deal

it's only a few hours, a bit like going through immigration for your visa renewal

Ah, now that's thinking outside the box - avert good idea.

Never been to Portland, Seattle is the closest but nothing but good stories about Portland.

Delta's fleet age is 16 years and their 112 MD80-90 is 26 years. Generally US airlines suck, especially when you're used to Asian-based airlines. Delta used to route as many flights as they could through Atlanta, which sucked, but the price was lowered accordingly.

They seem to rank first in on-time arrivals, according to the site I'm looking at, also regarding age, but they top the list of best airlines, so it could just be legacy info from us here.

In general American A is the worst

I'd ay give Delta a go . . . or take Sabang's suggestion and go via Vancouver

Been reading customer reviews for Delta. Seems pretty dreadful.

All you need to know about the in-flight product and safety on Delta Airlines

Cathay Pacific looks good to me, and not much more expensive.

This has been my experience. AA is to be avoided at all costs. Domestically Alaskan is nice and I do think you lot are giving Delta a bad rap. It is AA and United that horrid.

Avoiding domestic US airlines is probably a good idea if you can.

20-30 hours on a plane? In cattle class?

I'd lose the #travelling companion(especially with Snubs comment) and fly Turkish Airlines, the cheapest biz class you will get.

Jet Star is a subsidiary of Qantas(2020's safest airline)and is cheap in biz class too.

You will get a nice free piss up in the lounges then.

Just had a quick look at Turkish, its 1500 bucks for economy and only 1k extra for biz... it does carry a 36 hour flight time, plenty enough to try and drink most of your fare back

I'm with Helge, especially if you are going to hire a car, fly to Seattle and hire it there. A nice drive South and you are good to go. Seattle Immigration is OK too.
