Scam watch: Facebook Ponzi schemes take Thais in Australia for nearly half-a-million

Members of the Australian Thai community are falling victim to Ponzi scams operated through Facebook, with one group that SBS Thai has learned of losing nearly half-a-million dollars.

Kai* is among fifteen Thais in Australia that SBS Thai has learned are seeking to recuperate $480,000 lost from a shady investing scheme they came across on Facebook.

Kai learned of the scheme through posts on many Facebook pages frequented by Thais in Australia. The messages, posted by a Thai woman based in Sydney, invited people to invest in her 'money-saving' scheme in return for an unusually high rate of paid interest.

"She offered some monthly and fortnightly 'money-saving' schemes,” Kai tells SBS Thai. “For example, if you invest $1,000 with her, she will give you interest of $60 fortnightly for the duration of three months."

This story is personal for us because we got caught up in it.

My Thai Partner had been transferring money for a number of months ... everything was fine, delivered as promised.

I needed some money into Thailand and, despite reservations, transferred a few thousand dollars.

Murphy was correct! It was just then that the Ponzi scheme collapsed. My Partner lost a little more then me.

In the scale of things, we got off lightly, some Thai intermediaries lost hundreds of thousands, some even borrowed the money
from Family to process through the scheme.

I've always lived under the belief that ... if it's too good to be true - it's too good to be true.
But I was suckered. Sure, my Thai Partner said live a little, take a risk and I have no-one to blame except myself.

Woman arrested over alleged NSW fraud ring

A woman will face court today charged over an alleged $9 million-dollar fraud and money laundering syndicate targeting the Thai-Australian community across NSW.

In August 2018, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Financial Crimes Squad established Strike Force McKeon to investigate reports of fraud and money laundering.

The woman was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 22 February 2020).
Investigations under Strike Force McKeon are continuing.

Anyone with information that may assist Strike Force McKeon investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.

Following extensive investigations, strike force detectives executed two search warrants at a home and unit in South Strathfield from 8.30am yesterday (Friday 21 February 2020).

No, not the example you highlighted ... Like an octopus, I'm sure her schemes had many arms.

We just used the money transfer from Dollars into Thai Baht.

She just had a better rate then what was commercially available through the banks.

Thai Partner had done several successful transfers using her.

Sounds like a cheap lesson, could've been cheaper if you followed your bladder.

Firstly, Dave sorry for your loss.
I use the bank, OFX, or Transferwise. Other than my bank, i did extensive research into the other two companies length of operation, stability, reviews, complaints to govt depts and how they actually do the transaction before sending them any money. Even that does not guarantee your money but it does cut down the risk.
Expats living in foreign countries do seem to let their guard down when they are dealing with fellow countrymen and many of their countrymen take advantage of that.
For some it is hard to fathom money is now just a sequence of numbers that travel from one computer screen to another.
