I hear from more than a decade that Tokyo (and other Jap cities) has the toughest building standards in the world, requiring that foundations are built to withstand and absorb not sure what magnitude but a lot of seismic energy, with steel-reinforced concrete and rubber pads.

^Yeah. "The city waiting to die" as the Japanese call Tokyo. Japan gets something like 10% of all the world's seismic activity, so building standards have to be right up there. Don't let the Chinese build anything there, ffs.

They build ONE wall and are famous for eternity.

ONE measly little wall, which they paid for themselves, not even the Mongols.

That said, houses are only made to last 35 years, as opposed to Australia where they are built to last 3 times as long. . They tear them down and build a new one in just 2 or 3 months - after 35 years of earthquakes, it's time for a new one.

I always remember the tale from a colleague who went to Tokyo on a site trip... He was told not to worry if the hotel shook a little during the night as it was normal due to small earthquakes. Anyway, after a few beers he popped to bed and was duly awoken by the room shaking. A little while later he was awoken again by the mirror falling off the wall. He ignored it all and went back to sleep. In the morning he went down to breakfast to find the hotel had been evacuated that night. He missed all the fun and games and his breakfast...

No, it was simple stone . . . and didn't fall over in the wind.

They needed a real estate developer to help them . . . but did they get one? Nooo . . .

Just a wall but 2300 years old and one big mother, incredible that anyone could even conceive of such a commitment for those days.

So much has changed, if they built it now it wouldn't last a rainy season.

You do get used to the quakes. Most of them come and go in a few seconds. I was in Tokyo when the big one hit Sendai in 2011. Even miles away in Tokyo it was much bigger than most. There were constant aftershocks for over a week. I can only imagine what it would have been like in the epicentre.

They have been part of life since forever in Japan. Temples from centuries ago were built to sustain quakes, and lots of money and effort go into making new buildings as earthquake proof as possible

The Scots(with Roman consulting) did build a couple of walls later on,which are proven to be rain resistant(Scotland ).

Very few mexicans have crossed into Scottish territory since
