I think the key issue for the UK and US was the idea of "herd immunity" meshed quite well with the prevailing ideology of their leaders. BJ and Trump were loath to shut down the economy and limit the perceived "God Given" rights to freedom of movement and "exceptionalism". The only thing exceptional about those countries now is the mortality rate.

Thailand had no such problems. Once they saw how the Chinese dealt with it and the disaster unfurling in the West, they shut it down.

They also learned lessons from SARS.

Lao's isolation makes its lower rate less surprising.

Trump and BoJo put money first and didn't respect the expert's view because they knew better.

Ego is a major problem with both of them.

I found out today that a friend in our village is very ill in hospital with a "lung infection". He was driven up from Bangkok by his mother after being sick for a couple of weeks. His wife died last week from the same illness. Relatives went to see him but were told not to get too close. The doctor is not saying it is Covid, only that it is a lung infection.

Is Thailand worried about publishing too many cases?

The couple are in their early forties.

Well, I congratulate Thailand for its handling of Covid - but... seems there's always a "but". Thailand's success I attribute to the closing of the borders. They really did lock down the borders and place large barriers to entry - even for their citizens. Quarantine and proving you are a citizen.

Now, that appears to have prevented an outbreak of Covid in Thailand. If you believe the numbers reported – which I do. Today every adult and many children are carrying smartphones. If an outbreak did occur it would be difficult to hide. I visited the Mahidol Tropical Medicine Hospitals for vaccinations twice, late June early July. Both times the places were quite busy, and, talking with the Doctors, no Covid as per the Doctors, for what it’s worth. Now the Mahidol Hospitals are the big Bangkok Public Medical Hospitals – Thai, not private international. I assume if Covid was a problem in Bangkok these hospitals would be the overrun go to places for treatment.

As far as Thailands current situation – Wednesday, Mothers Day we visited the Nonthaburi Westgate Mall. Used to shop there 2-3 times a week pre-Covid. Post Covid we rarely go to the Mall. But, Wednesday we went – the place was packed. No parking, long lines of cars roaming until you lucked into someone leaving. We wound up parking at Ikea and threading our way through Ikea to visit the Mall.

Yes, we had our temps checked. Yes, they require a face mask to enter, yes they promote social distancing. Now, in-practice, There are log in books and smart phone scanning at the entrances that are ignored by all. As soon as you pass the entrance table temp scan, quite a few face masks wind up hanging from an ear or tucked under the chin. Social distancing – forget about it – it isn’t happening and it isn’t going to happen. Far too many people.

The point is – if an active Covid case manages to slip through the borders – Thailand is going to have a very difficult time preventing a widespread infection. Perhaps, if a Covid infection(s) occur and enough emphasis in the news occurs they may be able to contain it. But, judging from what I saw Wednesday – No.

Wasted a whole day trying to get a test for my daughter who awoke this morning with a fever, cough and loss of smell, she's only been back in school a week.

No home tests available from the NHS.

No appointments at testing centres anywhere in the UK at the moment.

Turned away from the nearest centre by two frightened security guards with a paper sign saying"Keep your windows up" and "No appointment no test"

So now we have to isolate for at least five days or till we can get a test.

If this is the situation now, the UK is gonna be fvcked in a couple of months and it will be survival of the fittest.

To top it all, i may be being made redundant from work.

Sorry i can't be more positive.

Covid kicked the little amount sane life I had , out from under me. I used to pretend to be normal by going skating or swimming once a week.

until people learn to stay home except to go shopping and governments support this then it will just get worse

and the worse it gets , the longer it will take to get under control - but you need leaders in government like Dan Andrews who are prepared to weather the sh1tstorm of drivel from those who have agendas that are not in line with defeating this problem

Is that the same Dan Andrews who screwed up the hotel quarantine, had the poorest contact tracing in Australia and introduced curfews on his own without Health nor Police support for the policy?

The guy is a clown who runs the only state is Australia that has ostensibly failed to contain COVID 19.
His chances of remaining in power are somewhere between zero and nil.

the hotel quarantine issue was caused by untrained security contractors combined with people unable to comprehend that the virus was very contagious - Dan may have accepted ultimate responsibility , but blaming him is just politics

the federal government introduced the covid app which has proven itself to be a pile of sh1t - again singling out Dan as responsible for issues with contact tracing is just politics

the curfews are the easiest way to police the populace and try to ensure they stay home and do not pop out to the local anti lockdown rally - again the main complainants are the political class

scotty from marketing and news corp are not happy with Dan being so popular in Victoria because he is showing real leadership of his state

the snivelling cocksuckers of the sitting federal government do not have a chance to display the same - scotty is a god bothering idiot and dutton has been well promoted above his abilities

all those cnuts kow towed to murdoch to sink the fibre NBN which is one thing that would have ensured we were not in such a painful position as we are now

all these years MBAing the country out of its assets is now biting us on the arse

My mad ex had TB some years ago when we lived in Phuket. She caught it from her brother. She responded to the medicine treatment, but it's vital that you take the prescribed drugs for 1 year, in order to get the infection out of your body. Also, my understanding from my ex was that all TB drugs are completely free from any government hospital, because the government is trying to eliminate this disease, which often is caught by the poorest who can't afford treatment. Certainly, my ex wasn't in any 30 baht scheme.

No. I'm not going to reserve with your fag app. And its an hour wait ?

Had to wear a mask the whole time. For the first 2 minutes it was ok. but after that I was in some irritating discomfort.

We only have these gay corporate hair cut places in the burbs. no mom and pop places.

For many, including myself, the virus has us stuck in Thailand. Leave and no way to return on existing visa. After talking with a couple in the know folks, looks like July 2021 before folks with Non img O or OA will be able to get into Thailand. Possibly with a 2 week quarantine required.

I really need to leave Thailand soon to visit potential customers in many countries but returning is a worry.

My legal guy tells me I can return as I have a work permit and based on a parental visa but I must quarantine upon my return.

    Problem is who to believe.

Yeah. You might want to send a lackey in your place. So he can be stuck out of country instead of you. I wouldn't risk it.

Jaysus, that's along time . . . will this thing really keep the world hostage until then?

    Usually the government . . . but in Thailand . . . Hmm...

Affect? Business in Malaysia is picking up, but I'm stuck here. Waiting for a few contracts for Zoom-work but they're taking a while as they're with several government departments. Price-point is 20-25% of normal, face-to-face consulting.

Luckily we have some work with my partners but also at a cut rate and office loans need servicing. Still not an issue but it's a see-saw.

    Vaccine, please.

There are rumors here (in PI) that it will be 2nd half of next year that they'll let foreign tourists in. So this is similar to Norton's news.

Travel here is still very limited - you need papers to go to another region. Only essential travel is allowed. I haven't left my province in 6 months - fortunately my mom lives in the same province so I can still visit once in a while. I'm still WFH but it's getting old. Yes, vaccine please. (It's a dreadful thought that the Spanish flu lasted for almost 3 years.)

At the moment, aside from Filipino citizens, only diplomats and those with existing work or student visas are allowed to enter. In August, they amended the rules (IATF resulution #60, I think) to allow foreigners who have a spouse or minor children in PI - for humanitarian/ reconciliation reasons, they said. However, the foreigner must apply for a visa at the PI embassy in his/her country - with all necessary papers (marriage cert or birth cert of the child, bank cert, reservation in a pre-approved hotel, etc). They'll also be subject to a covid test upon arrival & quarantine for 14 days in their home (if they tested negative). This is based on the experience of Mark (YT: Overstay Road) who was able to return to PI last month after spending some time in the US.

I saw in some comments that if the foreign guy is living with his Filipina wife (in the US, for example), the foreigner won't be granted a visa. His wife (if still with PI passport) will be granted entry, but he won't, because the purpose of his visit isn't for reuniting with his wife/ family - so it isn't essential travel.

The real problem (for all of us) is predicting the future. You do fit the profile of those who are "eligible" to receive a COE - but, it is at the discretion of the Thai Embassy where you apply. Then there is the matter of meeting the stipulations; insurance, Covid free test results, fit to fly certificate. Also getting in line for a repatriation flight and ASQ reservation. It is reported that a limit of 500 persons per day are allowed entry with, or course, Thai citizens getting priority.

    Good luck to you.

I am married to a Thai so I am eligible to leave and return - however, there is no way and no set of circumstances under which I would be willing to risk a departure because a return to Thailand may not be possible.
