Idiocy . . . here in NZ the community has been infection free for close to six weeks - no one wears masks, sports stadiums are full, malls are booming.

Take the hard decisions, follow medical guidelines and don't be an utter self-indulgent, entitled arsehole . . . it works

Cheers for sharing, haven't heard any good news stories like that here in the UK.

That's great, good stuff. We are hopefully moving into phase 3 in a week or two of opening most things back up. I can't wait for the gym to open again.
With a person like Trump in the lead, no wonder the cases are out of this world in the US. Put in some curfews and shut things down FFS. He is the one that wants to get the economy open as fast as possible!!

Last Wednesday the 24th and Wednesday the 1st did blood work and vaccinations at the Mahidol University Tropical Medicine Hospital. Use them because I have confidence in, and paperwork on, the vaccines used and their expirations, etc.

So, two roundtrips into Bangkok from Nonthaburi using the MRT Blue and Purple lines. June 24 every other seat X'd out. July 1 no X'd out seats. Both days 100% face mask compliance. Both days, social distancing maintained upon boarding in Nonthaburi, and, as we progressed into Bangkok, the distances slowly collapsed. On the Blue line no social distancing - not quite a sardine can ride but pretty close. No attempts to control the number of people entering the trains.

I can't say for certain but I expect early morning, late evening rush hour is a free for all with no distancing provisions followed at all.

Log in books and phone scan placards being ignored.

^Complacency always sets in when enforcement becomes lax. If Thailand truly has no new cases then they can probably afford to lighten up on some of the requirements (keep masks on, though).

When the "travel bubble" idea becomes a reality, new cases might appear, though.

Anyone think this travel bubble scheme will bring in any significant amount of vacationers?

Things are starting to return to normal here in Southern Germany. At least masks are being worn in shops and on public transport, also at the workplace if people are required to be closer than the recommended separation distance.

My wife has been speaking to her friends and three husbands have died, two from the Covid virus, one from heart attack. One of the deaths brought home the dangers of the virus (as if we didn't need to be told again). He went to a coffee bar in town in March before the lockdown, a few days later he started coughing. Just a dry cough without a temperature, bit like a tickleish throat that I'm sure we've all had, not something to bother the doctor with. About a week to 10 days later he felt tired all day, went to bed early and woke up with a fever. Wife called an ambulance, he got in by himself and they followed up in a car. They were about 10 minutes behind the ambulance but by the time they got to the hospital he was dead. No chronic illness and a fit 68 years old. All the family caught the virus, including his dad (late 80's or early 90's) but they all survived with no need for hospital treatment.

I still think a cheap oximeter ($20-$30) would be a good home investment to check the family every day. It'll pick up the reduced oxygen levels that the virus is successfully fooling the body...

After almost 4 months of quarantine, it's still mainly the same for me. At the moment, only essential travel is allowed in my area, so I just go out for groceries, bills and errands. Still WFH, travel & hike plans are shelved for the moment. It's just the way it is...

Oh, I've read/ heard that the vlogger /YouTuber Bald and Bankrupt has the virus and as of yesterday (?) has spent 9 days in ICU and faces months of recovery for his lungs. Bald is in his mid to late 40s, I think. Bald has been unmindful of the virus, so he's said in his Instagram post. I saw it from the blog post of another travel blogger, Gabriel Traveler.

    Link here:
Should I Be Traveling Right Now? - Gabriel Morris - Medium

I was also a bit surprised at the death of Broadway actor Nick Cordero. He was only 41 - looked slim & healthy, and had a small baby.

Nick Cordero, Broadway actor who battled COVID-19, has died at age 41, wife says - CBS News

    *******

The two cases above don't really affect me, but it stresses the fact that ppl who appear to be young & healthy can get a bad case of the virus. I have to remind myself to be diligent sometimes, because it's easy to be complacent re: disinfecting upon coming home, etc.

Australia to halve numbers of returning citizens as virus surges

"Australia will halve the number of citizens allowed to return home from overseas each week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Friday, as authorities struggle to contain a COVID-19 outbreak in the country’s second most populous state.

Since March, Australia has allowed only citizens and permanent residents to enter the country. Once they arrive, they enter a mandatory 14-day quarantine in hotels, which is paid for by state governments.

Morrison said from Monday, Australia will cap the figures at 4,000 people each week. Those who return will also have to pay for their quarantine stays.

“The decision that we took... was to ensure that we could put our focus on the resources needed to do the testing and tracing and not have to have resources diverted to other tasks,” Morrison told reporters in Canberra after a meeting of the national cabinet.
Neighbouring New Zealand enacted measures earlier this week to limit the number of citizens returning home to reduce the burden on its overflowing quarantine facilities.

    SECOND LOCKDOWN

The announcement of new travel restrictions comes days after Victoria state reimposed lockdowns in the country’s second largest city, Melbourne.
The lockdown will last for six weeks following a surge in coronavirus cases linked to social distancing breaches in hotels where returned travellers were held in quarantine.

The flare-up has forced 5 million Australians to stay home for all but essential business, led the rest of Australia’s states to ban Victorians from entering, and dealt a blow to Australia’s economic recovery.

To ease the pain for businesses in Melbourne forced to shut again and holiday spots hit by cancellations, the Victorian government on Friday said it would provide a further A$534 million ($371 million), on top of A$6 billion already provided.

“This is us saying: ‘We’re here with you all the way through what will be a very traumatic, a very distressing and a very difficult time for all Victorians,’” state Treasurer Tim Pallas said in a televised media conference.

Pallas said the state, which makes up about a quarter of Australia’s economy, now expects unemployment to peak at 11%, up from 6.9% now. Victoria’s economy is expected to shrink by 14% and take two to three years to recover, he said.

“I apologise for it because this is nowhere where any Victorian wanted to be, but it is the reality of the situation that we confront,” Pallas said.

Despite surging numbers of cases in Victoria, the state’s premier Daniel Andrews has relaxed restrictions on most of the 3,000 people locked down in nine public-housing towers.

Residents in eight of the towers are now under the same restrictions as metropolitan Melbourne. The other tower remains in a hard lockdown.

A testing blitz found 158 out of nearly 3,000 residents were infected with the virus. About one-third of those were in one tower, where everyone is being forced to self-isolate for nine more days.
Even with the latest outbreak, Australia has done relatively well in controlling the novel coronavirus so far, with around 9,000 cases and 106 deaths."

Australia to halve numbers of returning citizens as virus surges - Reuters

It appears that some countries citizens are being denied their, "right to return" and their "right to the access", the citizen's tax payers funded health system.

I am assuming the health systems in OZ and NZ are similar to the UKs.

One wonders how the two countries civil servants will determine which citizens will win the new lottery and how they will recompense those refused a "re-entry permit", for ongoing foreign accommodation .... costs.

As the article's female writer explains. She states; she is a 22+ years old, a self described, "adult who has herself made an informed decision" and her lifestyle is suitable for her, "at the moment"!

I suspect when longer term commitments are agreed upon, she may find "rules" become obligatory.

Religious, relationship "vows", her society/peer group "norms", joint responsibilities - financial (weekly bills, housing, transport, holidays, entertainment ....), family v personal time scheduling, biological time clock .... All will require "rules" to be adhered too in her foreseeable future.

Or possibly I being an "adult" who has himself made many, considered acceptable to me at the time, "informed decision", those attitudes/rules are now considered obsolete and adults can now absolve themselves of any responsibilities at will.

No affect at all. Queensland has only 4 active cases and all are overseas acquired with no "community acquired" case for 30 days.

Here in Laos, no Wuhan flu cases since April 16. (Only 19 cases and zero deaths in total). Strict lock-down and mask-wearing/hand-sanitsing etc previously. Now the country is open domestically, but international inbound travel is still very difficult. No postal service since March (do letters carry the virus??)

Covid absolutely F'd in the ass, the little bit of lifestyle that I had. Going swimming a couple times a week no more.

Peter Hitchens I normally like. But he's been winging on about not wanting to wear a mask since covid. The mask debate has taken over his whole online output

Wife and I caught colds a couple of days ago. I risk being sent home on forced time-off sick if I cough at work. Stupid freeking rules at the moment. It's not Covid, it's a freeking cold after the heat of Thailand.

its surging in Victoria and the rest of Oz is watching and waiting to see if it spreads. Luckily the Vic govt is taking a hard line - it may not be popular with everyone - not the Trump @ 1:12 - but its sage advice in these challenging times.

Pres. Du30 has placed Metro Manila on stricter quafantine again, due to increasing number of cases (103k + now). We eased up a little in June and allowed individuals stranded in the city to go back to their provinces. Now those provinces which had returnees - they're seeing cases too.

Duterte puts Metro Manila, nearby provinces under MECQ | Philstar.com

Most schools (K12) will start school on 24 August, bit it will be either online or modular. For public schools, the parents are supposed to get the learning materials from the school (I don't know if weekly or bi-weekly) and pupils will self-learn. Du30 has said that he won't allow schools to reopen unless there's a vaccine or proven cure. In his latest State of the Nation Address (SONA), he included a request to China to prioritize PI when they have the vaccine.

Duterte pleads with Xi Jinping: Prioritize PH for COVID-19 vaccine

As of 1 August, PI will now allow foreigners with existing long term visas (e.g. retirement) to enter the country. Formerly, it was only Filipinos + spouses & dependents, plus diplomats. Non OFWs & foreigners must shoulder the cost for the covid test (costs 70 to 120 usd, depends on hospital) & quarantine at govt-approved hotels.

On a personal level, not much has changed for the past 4 months. Still WFH and going out only for essentials. I've made wine (from fruit juices) and have a good supply of yeast, rhum & brandy, so I'm ready if there's another alcohol ban! Lol.

P.S. It was difficult to find baker's yeast - supermarkets were out of stock.

Though one presumes that proper testing in Laos is rather lax, it's strange to consider the likes of Laos and Thailand leading the way in how to combat such a situation, compared to the US and UK etc.
