Repatriation flights to UK from Manila will leave today

Coronavirus: UK citizens furious at PS1,000 repatriation flights from Philippines while travellers in Peru paid just PS250 | The Independent

^Got curious about that since I've been watching sporadically the lockdown vlogs of a Brit family who are in Siargao.

Summary: the mother of the guy, 71 y.o. (from Burma but now a UK citizen) has decided to take the emergency flight to London. She wants to go home - own house & surroundings. The guy (half Brit, half Burmese), his wife and 3 y.o kid have decided to wait it out in Siargao island since there's no positive case of covid-19 there.

If you watch their earlier lockdown vids - they were very positive. Now, 3 weeks into the lockdown, they're getting a bit edgy but still trying to remain positive.

    A previous vid:

    ++++++

On a personal note - just heard from a long time friend who lives in New Jersey, USA. NJ is the 2nd to NY, in terms of covid cases. He's immunocompromised and is worried. I told him to stay healthy, keep positive. He's worried that he may have it, since he has some symptoms. His doc said that if he feels worse, to get himself tested. I told him to keep in touch, and that I hope he gets better and it's not the dreaded disease....

Koh Samui is in lockdown and our fridges surprisingly got filled to the brim.
A friend working with food purchase for two major hotels came around with three big plastic sacks filled with food after hotel closing clean-out.
More to come tomorrow, family can't possibly eat all of it so a temple visit is planned for tomorrow - there must be many who are more in need than we are.

I guess school admin have finally had enough of social distancing as they are coming to film me teaching online tomorrow which seems bizarre the more I think about it. Filming someone looking at a screen through a screen, which in turn will be viewed by many people looking at screens. I guess screen recording software is not known to them yet, I'll show them the wonders of Loom tomorrow. I am looking at this home visit as positive in two ways.

    1. They like me and my efforts to date.
    2. They were really taking social distancing very seriously, so this is a good omen that maybe things are slowly returning to normal.

^Wow, that's okay I guess for you. Are you still getting paid? It is good to know you'll still be helping the students learn. Best of luck!

Whereas, I will be out of work till at least May 4th for now, but probably till September now. I can't really see school opening for a month and a half at this point, but it is good to think positive. As I was a substitute for a number of schools, I won't get paid and I can't teach online either. I will get the government emergency fund later this week of $2000 a month for at least four months.

Worth bearing in mind that very few Asians enjoy the social welfare safety net that exists in the west. The indigenous folk here will be eating dirt before much longer.
They have never experienced the kind of largesse that westerners receive, so they remain quite stoic about it here in the developing world.

The longer it continues, the more people will be forced into poverty, and back to the dark ages.

@switch - very true. Here in PI, the poor ppl are already complaining that they don't have anything to eat. Some have taken to protesting/ rallying at their city hall - and for that, they were arrested
for disturbing the peace & congregating in large groups. Don't know if they were sent home already. The protesters said that they were asking for the govt food support, which they haven't received.

Accdg to my colleagues, we're supposed to get 3 batches of food aid (for the 4 week lockdown). They've given 2 batches in my area already.

First one, they called via loudspeaker & asked ppl to Q at the corner store where village officials distributed the packs. I didn't get, since I had enough food & I didn't want to be near them since they weren't distancing.

Second batch, they distributed per household - I got a pack. The contents were: 3 kg rice, 2 small tins of sardines, a 4-inch wedge of squash and 4 tomatoes. I took the vegs for myself. The rice & sardines, I divided it. Half to a neighbor who has more mouths to feed, the other half to my regular chicken seller who's a single mom. I feel they need the food aid more than I do.

After 3+ weeks of lockdown here (and 3 more weeks to come - lockdown most likely to be extended until April 30), it's taking a toll on people - financially, emotionally, etc.

    Keep safe & healthy!

I agree with your comment about taking its toll on people. Here in Phuket, the economy is all about tourists of which there aren't any (or at least a few stragglers that haven't managed to get out). Hotels are nearly all closed, and the Thai population (the overwhelming majority of which are not from Phuket) are seriously struggling. There are daily reports of free meals being distributed though these tend to be for 100 or so people, and 2-300 people turn up. It just makes you realise just how many people here live from day to day, and when their income is cut off its a crisis. No money for food, rent, electricity, or even to put gas into their motorbikes.

Every hour/day there are social media posts and comments that appear to be getting more and more desperate, and unfortunately in some cases, anger being directed against foreigners who are still here and being blaise about the social distancing/curfew requirements.

^^That is quite sad especially for the poorer regions of the PI. I sponsor children in the San Jose City Area, Nueva Ecija.. I'm just hoping they are alright as they are poor to begin with. I think about how they are doing, so thanks for the updates, Katie.

^Wow, Pag. I can just imagine as Phuket literally runs on tourists. Thanks as well for the update. I was just there a few December's ago and miss it.

Katie, no food distribution yet here, but we've only been locked down 8 days, though many businesses closed a week before the quarantine. It is gotta be tough for many.

I read the protesters in QC were arrested, but bailed out by crowdfunding.

I'm praying for this to be over here next week.

    From my shoes –

First impact came when they shut down Nonthaburi’s Westgate Mall – had to make a run into Bangkok metro for a dental crown installation. Began wearing face masks when we went out – infrequently.

Westgate Mall is closed now so we pay our bills at the local 7 (used to pay at the Westgate Mall government center).

Did our primary food shopping at the Tops Market in the Westgate Mall – however, with everything else in the Mall closed it does not make any sense to drive there just for food shopping. Closer and more convenient is a Makro. With a nearby Tesco Lotus as a backup. Although haven’t made a Tesco Lotus run yet.

We currently do two food shopping trips to/at Makro a week.

In preparation of the announced shutdown we did withdraw two months living expenses from our bank account. Now as things go on – restricted travel and sheltering in place the funds could probably be stretched to four months. We did spend considerable on “entertainment” before. Now entertainment is cable TV movies.

Have provided funds for food to some of our economically challenged in-laws. Forced out-of-work and now unemployed. All are waiting on the Thai governments THB 5k/month stipend. (not patiently waiting) seems the Thai’s are getting pretty vocal amongst themselves – certainly don’t see anything on the news or TV concerning what can only be thought of as “a growing unrest”.

In a nutshell – minimal impact on myself – just some minor adjustments. Sheltering in place is not a problem. And applying proper preventative procedures was and is second nature to myself (occupational).

Obviously, I can’t speak for the future and refuse to make any uneducated and/or unsupported predictions. But, as far as human nature is concerned – unless the Covid Pandemic directly affects an individuals family medically – they will not “go gentle into that good night” and will likely ignore the mandated preventative measures – people need to eat and need to pay bills so they do need to work.

Now, shutting down a country may impact a fixed income retiree such as myself on a minimal basis – the general public “not so much”. Serious remediation and some significant steps to return to some semblance of normalcy are needed to prevent potential civil unrest.

The vessel boasts 52 doctors, nurses, technicians and staff. In addition to Shwayhat, there is a critical care nurse; a general surgeon; a family practitioner; a radiologist; lab technicians; a pharmacy stocked with anti-malaria medication; and an independent corpsman deployed with the fleet marine force to diagnose injuries on the ground.

In Beirut our LPH carried two full surgical teams and a complement of about 40 medical professionals - on a non-combatant peace-keeping mission.

@topper - it's good that the QC protesters were sent home. I hope they had food packs distributed to them.

Re: food packs - the first food pack was delivered in my area after 10 days into the lockdown, I think. Second pack was another 10 days after.

The govt here has said that 8,000 pesos (for Metro Manila) and 5,000 pesos (for provinces) will be given per family, for indigent families only. For the middle class, there's none. I have some colleagues/ friends who complain about lack of govt support for the middle class. Some have lost income due to businesses not operating, etc. Some are dependent on OFW (overseas Filipino Worker) income. But if the OFW relative has also lost his/her job abroad, then they can't send money home (I know of cases like this).

I've also heard that some subdivisions (gated communities) are not getting food packs, since they're considered as middle class and not indigent. So I don't know if your gated village will get some aid.

I think the lockdown won't end by next week. The govt seems to be leaning towards extension until April 30. I think your province will go with the majority and lift its quarantine by month-end as well. JMHO.

Graceless Fawn said in the main covid thread that PI is considering another 30 days after Easter. She works for the local govt and is probably in the know. But I think it will be until the 30th only, since the govt is already feeling the strain too (accdg to the President's latest report/ speech). He said the budget allotted may not be able to sustain low income families for 2 months.

    Link here:
Duterte inclined to extend Luzon lockdown until April 30 | Philstar.com

When I heard of the possible lockdown extension, I checked my food supplies. It can last for 1-2 months more, depending on consumption (will last longer if I eat less/ smaller portions). If I receive another food pack (it's my tax money!), I'll receive it then give it to neighbors who need it more.

    Stay safe, everyone!

Edit: it's official, Luzon quarantine extended until 30 April

    Katie,

Here the business people are already asking to partially reopen on the 15th, but with all the social distancing, the curfew and with all businesses closing at 8. I'm crossing my fingers as the covid numbers are declining here.

Twenty-four hour lockdown now in place for the Dammam conurbation (Dammam, Dhahran, Al Khobar, Qatif). It's a bit wearying dealing with demands from employers who should know better. There is a time for calling time out and picking up where one left off. It wouldn't be the end of the world to hit the reset button after the Eid.

A rough guess would be that one person per household is allowed out once per day within a designated distance. Likely the closest supermarket. Not including essential services, ie, those working in supermarkets. Refuse collectors. Water delivery etc.

Here in the PI, lockdown means..
Only the grocery stores, pharmacies and banks are open. No public transportation. No car, you be walking.
Only one person per household is given a pass to visit these places. Everyone else is expected to stay home. If you're out and about without a pass, you're arrested.
    Curfew from 10pm to 4am.
    Mask wearing is strictly enforced.
No booze/beer being sold in said grocery stores.
