So, it drags on another week. First of six supposedly that I'm laid off. Doing Uber Eats just to stay busy and prevent an incursion into my savings. No dine in anywhere, everything is take out. Selected food and paper products are depleted daily in the markets. Went to Dominoes the other day and was shooed out while waiting for my pie because one other person walked in. Talks of "FREE MONEY" in the news: $1000, 1200, 2000? Casinos unofficially plan to reopen by May 1. Online unemployment website has been down every day, but still got one week left of regular pay coming anyway. Road traffic off by at least 50%, it's a dream. Not one of my friends or family are sick, best news right now.

Starting to regret buying a seaside house in UK rather than a smallholding (the other option).

Have moments of anxiety. I lived through the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. From being bombed at the airport to eventual detention. For a second time I feel we are sailing into the night. People have not yet realised the possible full implications of this.

I thought I had my future secured after a lifetime’s work. A bunch of rental properties, substantial cash savings and a (formerly?) valuable beach front home. The hundreds of billions being thrown at this is just the start. Are we going to be living in post industrial world with a seasonal mutating virus, as prevalent as the common cold, but with one in fifty people dying?

Am I overreacting to think this could be a defining event in human history? As well as losing loved ones prematurely are we entering an entirely new age?

Oz govt quite generous really- all welfare recipients will receive bonus A$550 a fortnight for six months, plus two payments of $750. Laid off people to be compensated too. But bugger all to spend it on.

It's hard to believe just 5 or 6 months ago we were all happily sailing along with no knowledge of the carnage that was just around the corner.

Your concerns are understandable, however as you have substantial cash savings this has to be a good position.

My assets are 16% equities, 33% property and 51% cash (sold a business in January)- bargains will abound in the near future for the "fortune favours the brave" brigade.

I think that within the next month or so we will have a treatment for the Covid 19 and probably within 9 months we will have a vaccine. This is the speed that the powers that be will have to operate at.

The return to normality will certainly not be as protracted as many of the doomsayers are predicting. I think by mid 2021 we shall be well on the road to recovery.

Hard times ahead for sure but in the major events of human history this will not be a defining moment.

    I hope you are right.

Cash gives reassurance right now. In the UK tenants have been given virtual licence to not pay rent.

I don’t have a great understanding of macro economics. Normally if a government prints money we see inflation. But in this case consumer demand is likely to fall even if they run the presses through the night. Will cash retain its value?

Equities are trading at substantial discounts, although still pricey conpared to just a few years ago. Will consumer spending resume in 2020? I can’t imagine wanting to travel on a flight for a very long time. Even if a vaccine is developed and the virus doesn’t mutate (two ifs), will consumer behavior quickly revert to pre virus levels?

    so many unknowns.

I truly do not understand this worldwide lockdown.

I am in a third world country without any social assistance programs and all non essential businesses and department stores are ordered to close. If this continue millions will die from famine while everyone hoards the food and other essential items. Then watch the wrath of this virus really take place due to weakened immune systems due to a lack of nutrition and sanitary items.

Also, no courts, no law being applied in USA and Canada under the excuse that the virus is killing less than 1% of the population?

Essentially the crime is legalized now?

Watch the conspiracy theorists and new religions take hold once people get sick of this crap. Then we are truly screwed.

Seems we are entering some fucked-up version of a "Hunger Games" scenario. In order to gain a little security, we will be sacrificing a lot of freedoms (rights to assemble, travel, using cash, etc) that might never be rolled back after the virus is "gone". Or the threat of another mutation or separate virus is mooted as a constant threat to our societies.

Well NZ is going on lock-down as of tonight.

Stage 4 they call it which is basically enforced isolation and all non-essential services shut down.

Went to the supermarket yesterday to stock up. I've been OK since I shopped last Friday (13 March) prior to the lockdown which was implemented last Sunday (15 March). There are small mom & pop stores selling fresh fruit, veg & meats are open, as well as the neighborhood bakery. I went out for shopping since I felt a bit of cabin fever and also to see the main street, which is a 30 minute walk (5-10 min on vehicle). Streets were empty, most shops closed. Pharmacy open, as well as a stall selling grilled chicken. Supermarket was inside a mall, it was the only thing open. Outside of it, there's KFC & Jollibee, open but for take away orders only.

In the supermarket, there were relatively few people. All the staff & most shoppers were wearing masks. When you enter, the guard will spray alcohol on your hands before you get a cart. Social distancing of 1 meter in check out lane. Shelves were full, except for fresh bread and Skyflakes (type of plain crackers) - my go to brand. I had to get a pack of another brand. Lol. There were signs of "anti hoarding" put up, for goods like instant noodles, sardines, etc. And most importantly, there were loads of toilet paper! As I've said in other threads, TP is not a problem for most Filipinos, because they have the "tabo" (dipper). Some have bum guns in their homes.

    Some pics for y'all...

Will homeschool kiddo in the afternoons.

MM or I will do a supermarket run when the time calls, with kiddo staying at home with the other.

From what friends have been sending CM is going into shutdown mode.

Why has it took so long there?

All the parks here are now cordoned off with yellow tape saying AWAS around them. Apparently the Army are out in force of an evening now to enforce the MCO(movement control order) until it finishes next week.

Is that 'kiddo staying at home' referring to another kiddo, or another mistress? Surely all the viruses you must have will easily overpower corona
