Although I live in Queensland, the best city to me is Melbourne the capital of Victoria, which will soon overtake Sydney as the largest City in Australia. It is without doubt the sporting capital of Australia as the birthplace of Australian Rules Football, the most attended sport in australia and one of the most attended in the world (with two of the oldest continuous clubs in the world) and the only truly home grown National game in the country. With the Moto GP, Formula one the Australian open tennis and of course the MCG (melbourne cricket ground) that holds 100,000 spectators. It dwarfs any other Australian city for sport. The City was well designed by John Batman and its grid like layout makes it easy to navigate, especially for tourists, with the wonderful Botanic gardens and domain all within walking distance from the CBDand its tram system making public transport around the city easy. It has a great Cafe and dining culture in the surrounding suburbs such as Carlton, the home of Fosters Lager Victoria bitter and Carlton draft, the most famous Aussie beersjust a few minutes tram ride from the CBD. Very multi cultural it has a friendly feel much more so than Sydney whose people feel much less friendly and more pretentious than Melbournites.

Mu daughter requested an Australia Day Pool BBQ party for her friends a while ago at our place today . . . and left out the Aussie reference until they got there . . . 30 degrees - truly Aussie weather in NZ

Some of the parents thought it was cool and the ribbing started, but since my wife isn't an Aussie and is quite pro-NZ it was very one-sided - my youngest daughter against uNZud! References to the ABs and the Bledisoe Cup started flying poste-haste, who 'owns' the pavlova and Sydney vs Auckland quips (Auckland loses-hands-down, of course to any independent observer)
Underarm bowling was even mentioned (only Kiwis and Aussies would know) . . . get over it already

All in good fun as we know they'd all love to live in GodsOwn.

The other daughter is celebrating in Brisbane in true Aussie style; beach, seafood and music

And I'm stuck here in KL . . . nothing to do. Popping off to the pool in a minute with some sad looking prawns and an Aussie Riesling

Aaaaah, the expat life has its drawbacks

As I said above, we can introduce you folks to culture and taste, but you'll always be Australian at the end of the day.

    Pfffft, I say!

Brighton beach? Pshaw! Melbourne harbour? Pshaw! Multi-culti? You don't know Sydney. Pshaw!

You need to live in Sydney to know it's all wishful-thinking BS . . . simply envy from those who aren't lucky enough to be in Sydney (though my eldest prefers Brisbane . . . )

Walking from the kitchen or living room past the pool and jump in the harbour for a swim . . . Try that in Melbourne!

At the end of the day it's all good fun and Sydney is far more beautiful and varied.

Aaaaaah, Kiwis . . . the red-headed stepchild . . . howled when my youngest played 'Advance Australia Fair' as a laugh . . . and then went back to talking about the All Blacks.

    Gotta love 'em.

The best thing about Arsetralia is that it is an awesome kuntry to have a base in and return to a few times a year.

As far as living there full time goes,

    NA, fook that.

A woman has died taking part in a lamington-eating competition on Australia Day.

The event turned to tragedy after the woman died choking on the cake at Hervey Bay in Queensland.

"Sadly a lady died during the lamington eating competition."

"This lady shovelled the lamington into her mouth with no restraint ... inhaled the coconut and arrested."

"The pub was very quick to respond with CPR, and the ambulance rocked... working on her (for) over half an hour, it didn't look good."
