What`s the best way to store files in a cloud for free?

After posting the recent thread about apple devices, I was reminded how annoying it is that I keep getting pop-ups on my mac computer, asking me to purchase icloud storage.

Somebody mentioned in the thread that there are alternative ways to store your files in a cloud for free.

Could you fine people please tell me what my best options are. Manuscripts for my books are fairly large files (up to 700 megabits ) so being able to have plenty of free storage would be great.

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

There are or were some Chink outfits offering ridiculous amounts like 3tb, but wouldn't trust them.

Can't beat offline, plug in your tb external and off you go; 2 backups even better.

    ^^ cheers baldrick!

^ have had problems in the past with external hard-drives (if thats what you mean). Left it sitting for a couple of years and when I wanted to retrieve the lost data, the hard-drive was not compatible with my new computer.

There should always be at least 3 copies of your data, working data, one local backup (external drive or another computer) and one copy should be kept offsite, in a remote location (this can include cloud storage).

I've started using Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive for long term offsite backup. It's not free, but works out at about $1 per terabyte per month. ($0.00099 per GB per month)

One other advantage with AWS over other cloud services is that you only pay for what you use. You don't need to pay for 1 TB if you are only using 200 GB. You are billed monthly on your daily consumption.

not a bad strategy, but AWS glacier retrieval and storage process is not for everyone, a bit painful to setup and use for non-Windows users

most people are too dumb to use a simple external HD, and find that process to complex to do regularly. Their data is doomed. Hence why they need to store everything with iCloud or MS SkyDrive or even that horrible shit, DropBox

Dumb solutions for dumb people, and that's fine like that

^^ you're kidding?? And here is me thinking apple and the likes made a deal with god to keep files in his drawer in exchange for getting him up to speed with the latest technology. Surely it can`t be easy for him to watch everybody, all of the time ..
