    Guns

Is there any legal way for my Thai wife to buy a small hand gun, get training on its use, and keep it locked up whilst I'm away for a month or two as I often am.
Whilst we have 2 good security dogs and CCTV and bearing in mind she's not that keen, it would reassure me a great deal if she had access to such a weapon rather than her preferred defense of a kitchen knife.

We live in the midst of the golden triangle and doped up lunatics are often a problem. Not yet to us but fore warned is forearmed.

    Cheers

She needs to apply to your local Amphur. A background check will be carried out by the local police and yer done. Many firing ranges in Thailand. Just ask a policeman where.

That's kind of what I imagined So it's the Amphur, nor straight to the police.

Kin hell JJ is it really that bad?. Our mooban can get roudy on a Saturday sometimes but everyone kind of looks out for each other.

Last year had a POS try coming round and knocking on doors saying he had a sick daughter and needed a few baht. He left if hit on houses unless they had old folk on their own in which case he insinuated himself into the house and distracted them whilst he turfed them over.
Word got round quickly and get got caught and the shit kicked out of him before getting handed to the police.

Point being the message gets out that if you come round looking to turn the place over your in trouble in this village.

I get the worry though JJ, shit happens so randomly in this country but be careful as all you may be doing is giving the criminal access to a gun if things to south it could get the opposite effect of what you want, God forbid.

I did, well my wife did, got a gun licence some years ago. Not a problem really. Took a few weeks to get the permission as I recall.

Yer and worse than that ya putting a gun in someone's hands who is unexperienced and not confident in using the fuker.

Rediculous and potentially life threatening move.

If she did take a shot at the fuker and missed the bad guy may potentially go right off and gut and quarter her.

Ya know how these chicken headed yaba Thai fookers are.

Insane idea to tool her up .

I've been burgled twice and attempted once and I live in a village. First time, my wife woke up and there was a guy in our bedroom. I gave chase but the fcuker was shit off a shovel. Cutting it short my missus was living on her wits end until we got a gun licence. Don't have a gun now but have good security bars on windows and doors.

Thanks for the thoughtful commentary, mate.
    The way I see it thus;
When the wife goes to bed at night she's got a couple of reasonably powerful dogs roaming.
The access doors (2) to the bedroom are substantial and locked. She has CCTV from the bedroom which cover most of the house and garden.
Should, however, a determined individual or group push it and seek entry they could succeed with little more than a chain saw. We live in a renovated and extended teak Lana house.
The safe would be hard to find and impossible to open, that's besides the point.
I want her to be able to capably react, hence the training.
I'm ex forces and understand weaponry of various sorts. She's not.

So, to return to the original point, what must she do to, and most importantly, learn how to us a small caliber hand gun?

She's in the bedroom, the dogs go off, the CCTV detects intruders, the dogs have been dealt with, poison or what ever, they're coming.
She has time to get the gun from the locker , call the police, and await the outcome.

That's where I've got to so far.

Police response in our little village could take hours.

    Neighbors, forget it.

I'm not paranoid, we've been here 10 years but I like the idea of another level.

He could buy her a shotgun. No misses there. Seriously.

I’ve never felt as though a gun was necessary at my place in Chiang Mai. The neighborhood is small and tight. If I lived in the sticks in the Golden Triangle, things would be different.

Yes, we do live, very happily, in the sticks of the Golden Triangle and my concerns are for her not me. I'm away a fair bit and if, training (essential) could be provided it would be a reassurance.

I think given what you've said if she's properly trained then it may give you both some peace of mind. I was going to suggest some room reinforcement a la panic room so she can be safe and call for help but obviously less pro given the teak house set uo or can 't you get a family couple to stay whilst you are away?.

The safe room is the bedroom. Having said that it's a wooden, Teak, Lana house and a determined intruder wouldn't find it impossible.
We spoke, years ago, to the local cops with whom we have a very good relationship, and they were perfectly happy to give us a private emergency number and to patrol regularly when I'm away.

The gun issue is just something I have in mind to whit I see no reason to not do it.

The training is essential, whether by me or the authorities. Having used firearms a lot I'm only too well aware of the potential for disaster. It just seems to me that given the area where we live, which is great, it does have it's occasional issues. Therefore some substantial additional protection against what is generally opportunistic crime might be worth investigating.

I work away a lot and we considered this around 10 years ago when our first daughter was due. Incidentally, we had been burgled once, and had grills on all the windows. The burglars sawed through a grill with a hacksaw. They also pop them off with car jacks. The grills are a deterrent, nothing more.

We discounted getting a gun for the following reasons...

An awful lot of crime is caused by owning a gun - criminals break in to steal the gun. How do they know you have one? If it's to be used as a deterrent then you tell people you have one - otherwise it's no deterrent.

You have to be 100% sure you (your wife) can point the gun at someone and pull the trigger - otherwise you're just handing them a weapon. I don't know if I could pull the trigger until that eventuality happens. I'm pretty sure the wife couldn't - or could hit anything with all the panic that would be going on.

To my mind, if a gun is to be any use you need to keep it loaded under your pillow. If it's locked in a cabinet and not loaded, it's useless. The first thing you will know about a burglar is when they wake you up in bed. The dogs will have been nailed a few days before the burglary (unless you keep them in the house at night - their job is to wake you). I certainly don't want a loaded gun in the house, even more so with kids around. I'm British mind you, and am unfamiliar with guns and am not comfortable around them. You may feel differently.

Is there no reliable family member who can sleep in the house when you're away? Have decent lighting installed around the house. In case of emergency, hit the car panic alarm, or better still, have a house alarm installed. We now have a permanent gardener who sleeps above my workshop - that's huge peace of mind for me. My wife has family in the area who she could call in an emergency, but it would still take several minutes for them to turn up - probably longer on the seven nights of the week they'll be drinking.

I'd recommend buying something like a .410 / 16 gauge shotgun. Point and shoot, buy the gun and ammo, you can take her out the back of your yard and teach her yourself.

I can't buy one, as I'm a Farang, so where she buy one?

I'm 1000% confident that your wife can pretty much find someone with a shotgun to sell.

My wife bought hers in Bangkok. Your wife needs to ask a police officer in that they buy their own guns so know where's best to buy. In fact a policeman may even sell your wife a gun. My wife sold her gun to a policeman and he did the papers for transfer.
