Not sure what to cook for Christmas this year. I don't fancy turkey again so it might be a leg of lamb or a rib of beef. Wife quite fancies the idea of a barbeque, ready for when the kids (great nieces and nephews) come home from school.

All ideas welcome and sensible ones might even attract my attention...

fois gras, and maybe a Pintade, which is nicer than a Turkey

Not had Turkey in years, i find it incredibly dull. Last few years (3-6 ago) have been;

Rib of Beef
Goose
Spiced Gammon (which takes 2 weeks in marinade)

I think the occasion is as much about the Veg and accompaniments as the meat, got to have goose fat tatties, spiced red cabbage, bacon sprouts & peas, Honey Parsnips, Glazed carrots, Stuffing......it goes on

If you are determined on the BBQ front you could do some of the usual for the kids inc Ribs (my Mrs par boils and then we marinade and BBQ) and cook a separate joint say Beef etc in the oven and then take it out and finish it on BBQ to give it the flavour once the BBQ has cooled a bit. Its going to be juggling act and i imagine one in winter will turn out to be every bit as difficult to pilot as summer ones regards burning / timing - i'd par cook everything and BBQ to finish.

I feel these days that if you can prep as much before and do minimal cooking on the day it makes it less of a chore, they day is about family and getting chained to the kitchen for 2-4 hours prepping and cooking on the day is fukin boring imo - did it for over 20 years.

That's me out.

If the Kids are Thai then a lecture on Buddha and the living simply which means they should be grateful for fried rice should see them right, failing that;

BBQ as before with Wings, Ribs, Steaks and for a bit of extra adult fun a Cheese Fondue and Meat Fondue to take you right back to the 70s.

Fuk the veg and go straight to Swensons or Pudding as its known in civilised countries.

My kids appreciate my cooking, what can i say. Im sure yours do too. You are right on the rugger, trouble is i'm a slow learner and it took me years to work out it was bad for me, still you couldn't beat squeezing a jaffa at half time.

Having Xmas literally on the beach this year so will be BBQ option also.

All the Pattaya Christmas lunch/dinner menus are online now and as someone who can take or leave Turkey, they're pretty much all the same and way overpriced. Change Turkey for Chicken - who's meat I prefer - and these Christmas meals would cost 200 to 350 Baht at any other time of year. So they can all get fucked and I'll take the 2,000 -3,000 Baht they want for 2 of us to eat to the Naklua markets to get Lobster and Prawns instead. Never tried to cook Lobster mornay before, what could possibly go wrong

That sounds like the way to go.

Though 20 years ago I do remember 'Shenanigans', as it was then embarrassingly called, doing a Christmas lunch that was excellent value.

Shenanigans was fair value, but Hemingways is far better than they ever were, same place at Jomtien Complex; we were squeezed into a packed house last year for an excellent meal, this time booked early.

Christmas in Pattaya sounds like a fooking nightmare,

Very true, but unfortunately my dogs will kill them if I am not there, which is why I have to wait until I retire. The dogs will let me know if the danger is man or beast by their bark and also a good idea of where they are if outside the fence at night.
