^ I was on the 17th floor in ThongLor (the famous JC Tower... ), and a few mozzies got in the balcony, not many.

The wife learnt to swim in this pool, and the gym at the back kept me fit as a Dilly... Must've been about 2004-ish???

Yes, that's pretty accurate for Korea - nice, easy, a bit boring. Seoul and Busan are loads of fun, but pricey to live and go out.

Hong Kong, Bangkok, even KL are gonna be a lot more exciting than Korean cities - great places for an exciting and short holiday...

As for violence. Need some explaining on that one. Shit man I was all over the place and never saw violence or ever even worried about my safety anytime, night or day same with my wife and she was all over the place by bus, train or cab. BKK heat comes and goes but for the most part its always warmer than say the north during what we will call "Winter" months.

Her parents are in Nakhon Nayok, not Bkk - so yes, more mozzies there, but in Bkk too.

Violence, there's a lot especially for young Thai women. Stuff like rape and general abuse is through the roof. Virtually all the Thai women working in unis, companies and the wife would never get a taxi alone, for example, in the evening.

The wife can go to the local 24 hour shop in Korea at any time, and she says that she would not be safe doing the same in Thailand.

Violence and the threat of it is endless in Bkk, from the Mercedes and Fortuna drivers cutting you up with their "army gun club" stickers on the back window (or even waving guns through the window; no guns in Korea - a lot of guns in Thailand); you know the mentality of the average Somchai - extremely fukin dumb - so many of them have guns or knives or baseball bats to hand (every taxi driver in Bangkok carries a weapon - I suggest very close to zero taxi drivers in Korea carry weapons; do I need to go any further because that's extremely indicative right there...). Bloody end of every soi yobbos around the motorcy taxi gangs, selling drugs, wearing balaclavas, acting in aggressive and threatening ways - just never see it in Korea. Dumb Thais and foreigners endlessly having fights in clubs and pubs - just don't see it in Korea. The Thai police, one of the most aggressive and violent groups in Thai society, endlessly causing problems for local people (whether extorting money for a driving 'offence' or paid for by some rich local family to come round your house and intimidate for the sake of using the communal driveway or just sitting pissed at the local bar ordering some local to buy him a bottle of whiskey...) - you just don't see it in Korea. Bloody minivan mafia and their drivers off their head on caffeine drinks or yabba - just don't see it in Korea... Tech college gangs killing each other with home made guns - you just don't see it in Korea. Truly, the list is endless.

There are many international indexes of violence, I briefly looked at a few (very boring...), and they all had Thailand in the bottom third and Korea in the top third (and that's with the "North Korea Threat" built into the calculation...).

Bangkok is a very interesting and exciting city, but it's 3rd world mentality (never mind the countryside)... Korea is non-threatening, police are there to help you (if you ever see one - I've had zero conversations with Korean police in 6 years; sooo many times that some Thai police wanker affected my day in some negative way while living in Bangkok just doing a normal day to day job), fights anywhere will be between middle aged women arguing loudly, not young yabba heads and sex tourists... I don't think violence needs explaining - it's everywhere in Thai society and Bangkok especially.

Temperature/humidity: Bangkok = horrendous, the average working day had me sweating walking from the car park to the office around 7:30am. Perhaps there are 2 weeks in a Korean year that have these kinds of temperatures/humidities.

Your experience is your experience, I suppose, but Bangkok is hot, full of mozzies and violent - pretty extreme to deny any of those points, imho.

    @BB,
Hey just so we are clear, I never thought Thailand was better than Korea. In Fact Korea is significantly better in most regards. I go to S Korea frequently for business. Its very clean, roads are nice and people speak a lot of English. Its not cheap though.

^ You shouldn't be surprised by a Thai woman's fear of violence in bkk because you never worried about your safety though.

On that front there are dickheads everywhere in bkk who think they can act with impunity after a few drinks and whatever else.

Bangkok is a big city. Where will you be based? If you're working in the marine sector, then will you be based down on the southside of town by the industrial port? (locally referred to as 'gay city')...

On the BTS last night coming back from a "business meeting" at a bar. It was so full I couldn't hold my phone comfortably so started to see how much ripped up paper I could put on the guys bag in front of me. Very much enjoying myself until some guy told him on the way off the train. He wasn't bothered so I gave the guy a wave and a nice smile as the doors closed. He flipped. Last seen being held back by his gf as we spend off towards Bang Na.

Don't want to imagine what would have happened if the doors hadn't closed.
I'd like to see what morning looks like
Don't wanna drink pint after pint
I wanna wake up without feeling sick
    But I can't cuz I'm a drug-abusing alcoholic

Bangkok is less and less third world, sadly, and trying to mimic SING or Tokyo, without succeeding though, which make the place stuck between third world and first world IMO,

I liked Bangkok was a complete shithole without the shopping malls and the tourists, the place had something, the people, the rundown building, gave us a complete sense of freedom without the pressure of the modern world

now they are trying to become the next big thing in Asia, and the modern world pressure is taking away any sense of freedom you could get walking down on Sukhumvit,

now it's all business and shit, with chic restaurants and expensive English pubs

the place is losing the unique touch it had, even London has more personality and freedom than Bangkok

Remember Thonglor when it was an empty road, wedding shops everywhere, Anna's garden, and traffic was super fluid as a short cut to Ekkamai

    today, a fooking nightmare !!!

Tokyo is far from boring. Very vibrant and fun place. Osaka is good too. The countryside is dull though. Shrinking population means most young people move to the cities as soon as they can = more opportunities.

I lived in JC Tower for 6 months.

Cheap rent compared to other places in Thonglor, but I found it a little too far from Thonglor central, and moved back to my old building in soi 53 after the 6 month lease was up. The elevator was dodgy too. Always jerking. JC Tower is one of those buildings in Thailand that although a nice building, was let to run a bit derelict as no money was spent on upkeep. The Mosque next door was a bit annoying with the constant prayers broadcasted also..

Had to walk down the road to get a mororsai - and getting a taxi was an effort. Would be much different if I had a car, as you did.

I was most happy living on Sukhumvit Soi 53. Always easy to get taxis and a short walk to get anywhere -- albiet, a bit of a dangerous walk with no footpaths and packs of soi dogs.

You sum the dump up quite well, I'm sure soi 53 was better. Getting a taxi was luck of the draw that somebody had just been dropped off at JC Tower...

Imagine what state JC Tower would be in now??? But, you rented out big spacious rooms which you furnished yourself and thus could make very nice; cheap, had a gym and pool... The Klong Saem Sep (spelling?) stop was right next to JC Tower, so very convenient for me to get to Sanam Luang where I was working. Also, just across the river you had some entertainment complexes and those large 99 baht eat as much as you like "buffets" which were a decent feed. There was a small hairdresser next to JC Tower, an old Muslim fella, only charged 20 baht, would not take any tips or gifts (was wealthy from a couple of decades working in Dubai), lovely fella and did a fantastic haircut with a few stories of his life thrown in... The place had a bit of personality, and only a 5 minute walk across the Klong to the Go Kart place (not sure if it's still going?). I saw some of the most interesting and kind goings on, and some horrific incidents with drownings and general Thai insanities - closer to the Bkk that Papillion was describing (or trying to... ).

The baht bus, "little green monsters" zooming up ThongLor were 3 baht, not much traffic.

Many a time I got pretty drunk on the early afternoon half-price drinks at the Log Cabin Bar (name???):

Had a few decent restaurants such as a cheapish little Vietnamese. While it always had it's expensive elements and clubs full of 18 year olds in their new Ferraris, it developed a lot over the last decade with Malls and "high-end" restaurants.

    Second and then some.

First, Bangkok is more than 600 square miles in area. So, you can't broad brush stroke Bangkok.

I've been in sections of Bangkok where ALL eyes were on me "the Lost Falang" without my in-law bodyguards I'd have left penniless (bahtless) in this case.

However, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, just about any large Metro Area have areas where you (as an outsider) would be sunk. All big cities have their resident only slums. Crime is almost a guarantee and law enforcement protection in these areas is almost nonexistent.
