    Dilly is just being negative.

I think it's great that I can meet lots of genuine Thai people when doing the rounds in Bangkok.

For example, I get to talk to 7 taxi drivers in space of 9 minutes because 6 of them refuse to take me the 3km I want to go because of traffic/rain/don't want to turn the meter on/have to take the taxi back or just can't be bothered.

Met loads of police that want to stop, talk and search me around the Asoke section. They are great. they even check to make sure I have enough money and cigarettes by opening and searching said items. They even ask you to relieve yourself in a plastic bottle by the side of the road if needs be.

How can I not forget the gang of ladyboys that hang about under the footbridges. They are so helpful. One or 2 will give you a free squeeze, whilst another makes sure that you still have everything in your pockets.
    Black diamonds? I shit 'em.

Have you worked in Thailand before?

Singapore to Thailand is a huge transition - it would be like traveling back in time 20 years.

(and yes, I have worked in both countries)

Being a fat cvnt doesn't help.

No I haven't worked in Thailand before but am not a complete newbie to all things Thai.

I've worked in Singapore since 2003, and have permanent residency status, so if it doesn't work out I can always come back.
There are many jobs in Singapore in the marine industry, but this is the first suitable job in Thailand that I have seen advertised.
So I'm going to accept the offer and see how it goes.

I've heard Korea and Japan is boring as all fock. But of course everyone on the Thailand forum is going to play the grass is greener card and mutter about how big of an expert they are on how bad BKK is.

Thanks! Not sure if I will be allowed to go to Pattaya, but you never know.......

The salary is slightly less than what I am on in Singapore, but I think it's worth a try.
At least I will be able to get a Thai bank account at last!

Good for you and good luck.

I suppose one piece of advise would be to brace yourself for levels of incompetence and ineptness that will literally make you teeth hurt. Once you adjust to that it is all plain
    sailing.

Thats great mate, but why not move your family to Bangkok to be with you all the time? You could fly in from Singapore at weekends, so I don't see much difference commuting wise. The schools will be a lot better than Kan I'd imagine for your daughter too, although they are expensive also and another downside of Bangkok

Is Singapore that far advanced ?

Ive only worked Australia and Thailand and both are very similar except Thailand you need to hold their hand whilst you spoon fed them direction/orders/instruction...... with a calm voice otherwise they piss their pants and then face comes into it.

Like all these places, BKK has changed a lot. I did nearly 5 years from 2005 to 2009. Started in Chitlom, then moved to Rangsit as I got tired of the commute every day out of BKK. Moving back to same area near Ploenchit 10 years later, the Chitlom area still pretty much the same sans the new various huge skyscraper condo's added. Personally its an alright area. Its great that the OP can be closer to the fam no matter what.

Autumn and Spring are lovely in Japan/Korea - that's pretty much half of the year. Summer isn't too hot or humid. Winters are ok at the start (like now), but can get a bit unpleasant during a longer/colder one. But, Mandaloopy is in UB with -40 to -50 winters, so it's survivable.

For me, working in Bangkok can be fine on a good day, but gets very tiring over time; any moving around for business (or any reason) is a pain in the arse; the humidity is really unpleasant out of office, even getting to work at 7am walking from the car park to the office (or going out to get some food for lunch in one of the many great food options); Thai mozzies are sooo horrible; random acts of fuckwitery by either locals or tourists are just higher than anywhere else I've lived - funny at first, irritating over time; Bkk isn't as cheap (comparatively) as it once was; working with Thais all day ever day takes some getting used to, and isn't for everyone...
amen to that, Betty, very accurate !!!

I prefer Autumn, as spring can quite often be too cold, and the pollen in the air has a lot of people wearing masks and feeling unwell. Summer here in Japan is much hotter than BKK in my opinion. Humidity is through the roof. In Tokyo especially it is unbearable. Air-con units on every roof top pumping out hot air make a 35 degree day feel like 45. Winter seems to last forever. It's getting cold where I am already. Winter can last from mid November until March. February is the coldest. It feels like winter here lasts forever - and it does last for 5 - 6 months in many ways.
I suppose the grass is always greener BB.
I have fond memories of living in BKK and often feel that is where I will spend my twilight days. The weather is a big factor. As long as you have a pool to plunge in and out of all day, I feel the heat is bearable.
Interesting. I lived in Thonglor for about a year, it was nice but quite a small area - and maybe the dodgiest police in Thailand... I had 10 years in Bangkok, lived all over, from small apartment to a big house with a nice garden in a compound (during the big flood...). Also, have a car, so drove a lot, did all other transport, and the best was when I lived at the top of Thonglor and would jump on the Klong Boats - and that was still pretty awful... There is no way in which Bangkok is equal to Seoul/Busan/Daegeon, imho, other than food. My Thai wife hates going back to Thailand for two months a year to see her parents - cannot stand the heat, violence/dangers or the mozzies; she much prefers Korea, especially the safety element; she's even getting used to Korean food.

Japan must be a lot hotter than Korea in the summer (I'm relatively north, also), as the summer only has a week or two of 32+ temperatures when it's also humid. Winter is the worst, the last few weeks can drag on and be pretty cold, -15 to -20 for maybe a week or two.
    Cycling should be banned!!!
