Imagine what state JC Tower would be in now??? But, you rented out big spacious rooms which you furnished yourself and thus could make very nice; cheap, had a gym and pool... The Klong Saem Sep (spelling?) stop was right next to JC Tower, so very convenient for me to get to Sanam Luang where I was working. Also, just across the river you had some entertainment complexes and those large 99 baht eat as much as you like "buffets" which were a decent feed. There was a small hairdresser next to JC Tower, an old Muslim fella, only charged 20 baht, would not take any tips or gifts (was wealthy from a couple of decades working in Dubai), lovely fella and did a fantastic haircut with a few stories of his life thrown in... The place had a bit of personality, and only a 5 minute walk across the Klong to the Go Kart place (not sure if it's still going?). I saw some of the most interesting and kind goings on, and some horrific incidents with drownings and general Thai insanities - closer to the Bkk that Papillion was describing (or trying to... ).

The baht bus, "little green monsters" zooming up ThongLor were 3 baht, not much traffic.

Many a time I got pretty drunk on the early afternoon half-price drinks at the Log Cabin Bar (name???):

Had a few decent restaurants such as a cheapish little Vietnamese. While it always had it's expensive elements and clubs full of 18 year olds in their new Ferraris, it developed a lot over the last decade with Malls and "high-end" restaurants.
    Nice memories. Thanks for sharing.

Did you ever eat from the convenience store in the building? It was cheap - but a little dodgy. People were nice though. If you went there too early in the morning they would all be still sleeping on the floor. They used to deliver meals to your room if you called them ..... I ate there a little bit too often because there was nowhere else close by late at night. There was a pizza restaurant that was just down the road and delivered too. They had a really good salmon and spinach pizza that I used to order.

The baht buses were cool. Have to wonder how much those old mercedes benz buses are worth these days with the price of classic cars these days.

There was a few really good cheap thai restaurants in Thonglor when I first moved there is 2004 - they had moslty dissappeared by the time I left in 2008, but there was still a few good places. The padthai place at the beginning of soi 55 was awesome. there were a few japanese restaurants where you could eat for around 100 baht. There was a good place that did peking duck and rice for 60 baht or so.

You also had the option of more classy places in Thonglor. Really good supermarkets and some excellent mid-range restaurants. A good british pub that I forget the name of. Soi 38 was one of the best street food places in BKK back then. Is it still there?

I could live there again in a flash.

I was a private tutor for Japanese expats when I lived there which gave me enough money to live well. Doing visa runs to Cambodia every month was a large part of why I ended up leaving. I was in my late 30's then - would not want to have the stress of that again..

Well enjoy it, I'd certainly live in BKK for the right kinda teaching gig. Lived in Rangsit on the edge of town for 8 years on and off, not going to win any awards for being beautiful but there was plenty to do in terms of restaurants, bars, gyms and Future Park. My best friend took over my job and she's still mostly enjoying it. I think I would be happier in a smaller city or town, though. Massive crowds have never been my thing, both Mandalay and now UB are perfect in terms of that for me.

    Good afternoon wack jobs,

If ya want to fook ya life up then take a job in Bangkok that requires a daily commute by car.

An example would be, A pin headed teacher and need to get to ya school in Silom when ya live in Rangsit. ????

Myself would take the BTS but its just an example innit.

Bettsy is a prime example. Takes a fuking job in Bangkok and drives his coonting car everyday to work which results in a fookin massive brain implosion then bitches like fook on here that the place is fooked ?????

Ya get the drift dont cha eh.

Only work in Bangkok if its on the BTS and rent a fookin Condo within walkin distance of ya work.

Thats the bottom line basics bitches innit.

Another one is if ya dont like noise and the odd bit of pollution and ya like looking at mountains and beaches and being a dead boring coont dont bother fookin comin eh.

Us wank spots who love Bangkok give zero fuks that you nature lovers dont like Bangkok.

    See ya fookers innit.

PS, and dont fookin bitch because the BTS and MRT are full at peak times.

Its a fookin city with 10 million kuntos in eh.

    Just sayin again like.

That's not the whole of the truth, Terrance...

I've lived in Thonglor and got the klong boat to work, easy. I've lived in Jaransanitwong and got the bahtbus/ferry to work, easy. I've lived in Bangmod and driven the car to work at Mahiodol - up Rama 2 and around the ringroad; against the traffic, easy...

I've had some horrible journeys, living in Phrakanong and Onnut getting the BTS to National Stadium then number 47 to Sanum Luang wasn't much fun there or back...
    Cycling should be banned!!!

    I mean fook me girls,

These threads are fookin rubbish simply because every coonta has a different cercumstance. If ya a workin pleb i would never work in Bangkok unless i was on full Expat benefits.

And that includes a fookin Helicopter to get ta work.

If ya a retired run of the mill shit stain just havin a giggle Bangkok can be fookin brilliant if ya work it.

If ya can't do that fook orf up Norf eh.

    Cheers fukers .

For every problem there is a solution Fatboy...

Let us old timers try and guide you through the solutions...

Pollution- Buy a carbon facemask for your commute then at night and weekends stay in your condo blasting out more heat and co2s for those slanty eyed fucks who call you an alien outside.

Traffic jams/crammed BTS commute/ taxis who tell you to get to fuck - buy a bike licence and a scooter and take your life into your own hands riding on this Earth''s deadliest roads.

I'm gearing up for the footy now so i'll leave the other solutions to others.

I'm out of here in the New Year btw and heading to somewhere more civilised so a fair bit of animosity and realisation to the place and the rose coloured specs are no more but it's not all bad, especially as a noob to the place, you should love it at the beginning.

Enjoy it whilst it lasts and the main thing is you are near your family. And thats all that matters.

But for me Thailand as somewhere to live...and its becoming a nanny state now, full of far more reasons to leave than stay.

    All the vest and underpants

Just googled Australia's dullest place and Im sure Lulu can help out with some detention centre in Sydney but thats not on the list, there are three places tied... Wombatbalong, Brisvegas and Perth.

Perth ran out the easy winner.

I didnt know Perth was closer to Jakarta than Sydney.

You'd love Weston Super Mare Terry; its full of caravans, has a 20mile strip of beachy sand before you hit the sea and you'd never slag off aircon guys again in your life.
As for camping out, you wake up without your balls stuck to one of your thighs or black widow spiders in your boots and some fat bint that cost you a bag of chips
