Transfering money to Thailand from the UK.

    Good afternoon all,
Just wondering what services people used to transfer money to Thailand from the UK, we are still using Barclays and the charges aren't too high, has anyone got any recommendations?
    Thanks
    Alan

Used it about a month back. A couple of k sterling and got a good rate. Think it took around 2 days to get zapped into my Thai account.

    Transferwise.
I have used them a few times and I like their transparency and their speed. You can compare before you decide.

One issue with Barclays. First time I sent money from Barclays to Transferwise the bank locked my Internet banking. Took me about 30 minutes of international call time (I used the secret Barclays Skype number) and an absurd number of security questions to get it reset. They suggested it was because a lot of older customers (f... them!) had been the victims of fraud and they wanted to be sure. I suggested they could ask me instead of making it my problem.
Another time I tried the newer click-through link to Barclays from the Transferwise website. Guess what, locked out again. Another half hour of my life gone trying to get back into my account.

I don't believe it is 'security', I think it is a form of unfair competition. Barclays are scared of losing this business.

    Anyone else had similar problems?

Last transfer used OFX. Have used Banks & Transferwise previously, OFX had the best deal on the day from Oz to Thai bank. Fast & efficient.

    Transferwise. Transparent and quick.

I tried posting a longer reply yesterday and it disappeared into the ether. My added point was that Barclays blocked my Internet banking when I first transferred money to Transferwise. It was a long and tedious process getting it back up and running. Then they did it again a few months later. Feels like unfair competition to me.

    Anyone else encountered this?

That is just the sort of fucking shitty behaviour that you report to the Banking Ombudsman.

I think you will find that do actually do it for security reasons (theirs not yours), if someone was trying to access your account illegally and they did nothing you would be asking them to refund you the money. Having someone in Thailand accessing an account in England (I assume) would raise suspicions.

I had similar experiences with my Aussie bank blocking my credit card when I used it to book flights while I was working in Indonesia. I had to call them up and get the card reset quite often. I asked the one day had they ever looked at the phone number (it was an Indonesian number) I used for SMS security codes.

Banks I would love to be able to do without the mother**ck**s and they charge you for their disservice.

I complained to my bank about them blocking my card. I would arrive in Thailand, have to phone them when I got there, and I'd get back to the sandpit and the fuckers would block it again! I told them that most of my card activity is between the sandpit and Thailand, and has been for over 30 years, so why the fuck do they think that is "unusual behaviour"? They informed me that while reporting a card block they had initiated for no reason, I could ask for money to pay for the call. I twice requested 30 quid to be paid into my account to cover an international call from Thailand to the UK on my Middle East mobile, and they meekly did it, each time after me quoting what the customer complaints people had told me.

I only had to do it twice.

    No blocks ever since.
