    There are also 5 intersections in the first picture and 28 in the second.

    The answer depends on what you assume the question to be.

    The four square box is five boxes, the four small ones inside, and the one box containing those four. Its not how many 4 square boxes there are, its how many boxes in total there are.

    Therefore the big puzzle is 40.

    Looper nearly got it, and realised his error after I gave the correct answer.

    The answer is 10. There are no shapes like it except the four little boxes. All the other boxes on the outside have sections cut out from them by the inside boxes.
