That's a sad indictment of how much they fucked it up.

Then again I remember Cowboy was only good as a place for late drinking and a game of pool.

Can anyone remember the various incarnations of Bangkok Beat? It was a decent place for a relatively chilled night out if you weren't planning on going full on mental.

We used to move between Finnegans at Nana and a bar at the lower end of Patpong, where we had free run of the jukebox, before choosing one of Nana or Cowboy if it looked like it was gonna be a bit messy.

What was the go-go on Cowboy with a glass floor that you looked up to from downstairs or am I imagining this? I thought it was Shark Bar, but I've just Googled it and it doesn't seem to be the one.

    My favourite place.

I only know it from when it was in Soi 7/1

Good bands, used to love the upstairs bit.

Above the unwashed masses, where the pool tables were.

    ---

I think they've built a hotel/condos above it and it's just a pool bar now?

Didn't mind the Landmark (hotel) Bar (downstairs) opposite when they had the 2-4-1 beers

And I liked the band. Very relaxed, but only for early in the night.

It was always on the same soi but had had different names over the years.

If you liked Bangkok Beat, you'd probably have liked the old Country Road on 19, the same soi as the old Honey Hotel (I think), which had, err, a particular Je ne sais quoi...

No-one has mentioned the place, near NANA on Soi3

On the right hand said as you walked in the direction of traffic.

They used to serve a decent amount of free food around midnight.

Big place, all on one level.

It was good, but, for me ... didn't have a 'vibe'.

I had a few beers with Kim Fletcher yesterday and he claims the following:

    1. Matthew Swire (his partner in Jools) partnered with Michael Jackson (an Australian) in a bar called Thriller in Nana Plaza, not Manilla.

    2. Robin Williams never had a meal in the White Rabbit. He normally ate in a Restaurant on Soi 23 whilst filming Good Morning Vietnam. Another Ameican film crew normally ate in the White Rabbit.

    3. Big Dave's Big Chair ended up in Jamesons in Pattaya and was later taken away by a Thai recycling fellow.

Kim welcomes one and all to his bar in East Pattaya to have a beer and discuss the good ole days. https://www.facebook.com/fletchersfolly/

Surprised that nobody's mentioned Sa-pice in the basement of the Ambassador on Soi 11 yet (not to be confused with Sa-picey).

The "office girls" bla bla bla in there were more of a handful than the fucking brass themselves!

Great times. Amazing my cock never fell off.

Check Inn on Sukumvit was a lovely steak joint back in the day. Great evening live music and really nice and friendly hostesses back in the day. Between soi 3 and 5. A bit of class for sure..

I have to be honest with you, AO. I was never running around Nana and the lower Sukhumvit area looking for steak and a nice meal.

Although you'd be very surprised if you ever read the food reviews in the Bangkok Post between about 05 and 09. But that's another story entirely.

Yeah, that's the one. Sa-pice was a mixture of bad girls and bad girls pretending not to be so bad 'cos they had a job/sponsor.

What a nightmare that was for me in my late 20s.

Without doubt the most macabre place I went to after hours was the Thermae up an alley next to the Ambassador Hotel.

When you entered through the toilet you knew then and there it was going to be different.

Some crazy fuckers in there and normally an interesting night to be had.

I only went in Thermae a handful of times. When we first went in we thought it was that bar in the Star Wars film and we fucked it off pretty sharpish; some definite weirdos in there, LT.

Did you ever go up to the after hours places in Silom? A Thai bird I used to knock about with took me up there a few times.

Proper buzzing stuff. Even on a Wednesday night.

Nah mate as I mostly had to get up early and be at work at 8.00 am.

When in th Nana area I did go to a few after normal hours bars under the Tollway and I think it was called Soi Zero.

And I often went after hours to the Music Venue club opposite the Office Bar off Soi 33.

Was it the Thermae that wws in the basement of the Grace hote?l. Can recall going to a bar in the bowels of the grace but was never sure what it was called. I do remember the absolute reek of body odor coming from the 100 or so arabs that were lurking in the Lobby. ..... not practicing there religion.

    No mate.

The original Thermae was in a small short soi next to the Ambassador Hotel. If you had been there you would never forget the place.

It was shut down and reopened down Sukhumvit Rd and it was nowhere near as unique or good.

During the Taksin crack down on opening hours the underground bar at the (dis)Grace Hotel and Nana Disco were pretty much the only places open after hours. The guys and gals would file out of the bars at closing time and end up as one heaving mass at one of those places. Later on a few firetrap after hour places opened up in abandoned buildings with a mix of normal & working girls. Absolute minefield.

There was also the speakeasy type Love Scene along Soi 23. You had to knock on the door, wait for it to be unlocked and then you would get led down a short passageway to the bar. A favourite place for Cowboy patrons & staff to eat and drink after hours. Last time I was there the door was gone and the place was an open bar & restaurant.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

Was New wave on 7/1? That had pool tables (with which I used to be very familiar).

Call out to the long gone Clinton Entertainment Plaza (and white house a go go). The place that got bulldozed by Chuwit was I think the "Sukhamvit Square Night Entertainment area".

Also shout out the the bars on Sukhamvit 0 (under the overpass and along the train tracks), as we as a small area that used to be about where asok station is now.
