Can I ask you if you went back to Australia each year to get a new IDP as when I got mine earlier this year it is only valid for 1 year.
I also drove here for the past 15plus years and only used my Aussie (WA) licence and never had an issue.
However in January I was stopped at a roadblock in Buriram and the guy in charge of the road block said "Aussie licence no good, must have IDP." I was fined B200 and issued a receipt.
I had previously tried to get a Thai licence but was told by the lady at the Transport Dept. Office don't worry just use Aussie licence.

Then I read a thread on here or over on the "darkside" forum where you can only legally drive her on an IDP for a maximum of 90 days and then you must get a Thai Licence.

I now have a Thai Licence.

One day I might start to understand this place but I also think I will die before that happens.

Only slightly related but recently in the back streets of Bearing they've had police stops at about 5pm. Normally with a guy in black and a stab best a couple of hundred yards down the road. What are they looking for? Illegal workers maybe or drugs is my best guess.

Shits me up every time though.
I'd like to see what morning looks like
Don't wanna drink pint after pint
I wanna wake up without feeling sick
    But I can't cuz I'm a drug-abusing alcoholic

I've always drove here on a Thai licence. First thing I did upon buying a car was to sit the test. I too didn't know the rules about driving on a IP or a farang licence. Twas my missus who pointed it out that it was written in the small print of the insurance documents. I'd imagine problems start if you have an accident and try to make a claim? We all know what insurers are like.

    It says in the link
However, those with a foreign licence as described above or an International Drivers Licence are excused from doing the practical driving test when applying for a Thai driving license.
Irrespective they made me sit the test. Different office different rule.

I went to renew my 5 year today, they said I have to come back on another day before 9:00 so I can watch the movie and do some tests. I couldn't believe it, never had to watch a movie when I turned the 1 year into a 5.

Although it is good to see all the Thais doing it, I'm sure the roads will soon be much safer.

Correct mate and the insurance company including the police told me I could drive here in Thailand without any problems which I did.

No mention of 3 months or other stories!

I decided to get a Thai licence for no other reason apart from the fact my mate was getting one and I went with him.

I would have been better staying on the IDP as they would have allowed me 0.05.

Speaking from experience, sucking on a copper coin will generally scupper a road side breathalyser.

I spoke with a bird today who works on walking street and she claims to put a 10 baht coin in your mouth for 10 minutes will get you through any Breathalyzer test.

I scoffed and she claims it works as she proves it does work most nights when she is driving home pissed up.

There's a difference in Thailand between the 'mai pen rai' you get from a bone idle know-nothing jobsworth verbally before you claim and what you'll be told in writing when you do.

    Never noticed this stuff before?

Best anyone with questions speak with the people who pay the bills in the event of an accident.

Not long ago we purchased a new Ford Ranger and thr insurance company questioned who would be driving the vehicle.

My wife said her and me and after getting copies of my IDP and Aussie licence they confirmed we were fully covered in writing and as part of the insurance coverage.

Best you get proper advice and not from dickhead know-it-alls on an anonymous internet forum!

Bet the insurance company denies that conversation if presented with a large claim from a Farang obviously living fulltime in Thailand and still using an IDP.

I don't have accidents but my documents remain part of the insurance policy approved in writing by them.

    What are you betting Fondles?

Fully covered for her but for you only for 3 months. But being as you now have a Thai license the 3 month rule doesn't apply.
