    Would You Go For Falsers?

I'm seriously thinking of getting most of my upper teeth taken out(only about 10 of them) and getting a nice new set of falsers.
The dentist said, however, that if I took the front 4 out, my face would change, I.e I'd look a lot older. Has anyone ever done this?
The alternative is to get some implants. 50,000 baht each plus some crown for 10,000 baht each. Any advice?
Could look good for about 200k.
    I'm 50 years old btw.

CD ... that's a decent price for the implants.

I've had 3. Two from a football injury and 1 from ... shall we say, less then optimal dental hygiene during my misspent youth.

I pay the Thai price and that's currently quoted, for a friend @ BHT 50,000 - 75,000* ... depending on the brand of the implant (I believe Sth Korea vs the USA).

May I ask where that implant quote is from?

    * mine were BHT 37,000 ... but that was 5 years ago

Gold implants are the way to go if you can afford it. Feels exactly like a real tooth but lasts a lot longer.

Sorry I don't have any advice, but I am curious as I (too) am tired of f**king around w/ thieving dentists.

My mother did a package deal in Costa Rica when she turned 60. Paid around 30,000 usd to have em all pulled and replaced with implants. Total VIP treatment = limo at the airport, prescribed drugs, 5 star hotel, 24 hr. line, the lot. That was nearly a decade ago.

Did the dentist say your face would change with the false teeth but not the implants?

before committing yourself, make sure your maxilla is suitable for implants, a ct scan will determine if the bone in the molar and premolar region is thick enough to receive the implants, a sinus lift or bone augmemtation may be necessary.

if your two upper canines are in good shape and there is no periodontal pathology then consider fixed bridgework using the canines as abutments to replace the 4 incisors that you say are in poor shape rather than implants. it is simpler and will solve the appearance problem. upper canines are firmly rooted teeth and eminently suitable for bridge abutments due to their excellent load bearing capabilities.

many dentists are quick to offer implants, so make sure the one you choose has plenty of experience of this very technique sensitive treatment and has full knowledge of the pros and cons of the many different systems and different materials used based on your particular case and on the reported clinical evidence
regarding success rates etc. and uses that evidence when answering your questions.

before seeking opinions and quotes, research it all thoroughly and know your stuff. cheap is not always best, and there are many reports of systems failing after a few years due to bone resorption and infection around the implants.

there are many experienced and ethical dental surgeons in thailand, and there are just as many cowboys.

    good luck.

Don't let your wife get implants. Get her falsers instead (even if she doesn't need them) and then get her to take them out before chowing down on percy the purple-headed pink python.

What about the in between time when you have to allow the bone/gums to regrow around the holes before having them permanently put in?

I saw a programme on tv and those few months didn't look much fun at all.

I recently had two compacted wisdoms out each side and even for such a small job those few weeks post extraction were fucking horrible

    ^ ^^ I've had 3 implants done.

One of the implants had to be delayed due to an abscess in the gum.

That required artificial bone to be implanted/grafted and allowed to become structurally sound.

My dentist recommends 3 months between the attachment of the post and the fitting of the tooth.

It's sort of a weird sensation getting the post put in as it feels like a mechanic is working inside your mouth and not a dentist.

Getting the actual tooth fitted (3 months later) i no is deal as most of the work is done getting the post set right.

The guy who does my work is in Bangkok, did his dentist degree Thailand and his post grad studies in the USA.

    Nice Guy.

As much as you can trust a Thai Professional, I trust him.
He's not on the main road and most if his Clientèle are Thai, I've never seen a Westerner in his wait rooms.

My husband had implants for five of his upper teeth at the Faculty of Dentistry at CMU, perhaps 12 years ago. Never had a minutes problem with them.

It did take several months for the whole project to be completed even though he had sound bone and didn't require a graft.

dentistry, on the hard tissues at least, is just that, mechanics but on a tiny scale with no room for error and with an extensive knowledge of the properties and composition of those tissues and of the materials used to augment or repair that tissue.
the vibration of the drills and chisels are amplified by the bones of the jaw and face and delivered in their full glory to the ossicles of the inner ear.

soft tissue work is very different.

if you don't like what you have why not just get your originals fixed and porcelain veneers put on them. There is no substitute for real teeth. I remember my father had his teeth out and a set of dentures. He always regretted it.

But in the UK at last orders, you can buy two pints and drop your dentures in the second. This ensures that none of your mates drinks your second pint.
