Thats right, I gave up on carry on years ago, great if you don't need a razor, scissors , a knife and no soaps & you are happy for some dick to rummage through your bag telling you "cannot"
I carry a small computer bag now and a *uckin huge suitcase that near drives itself.

You want something durable and sturdy, buy a used military duffel bag.

On a few occasions I have seen Thais down here washing Army uniforms and caps in the lake. Did wonder if they were stolen or from dead bodies.
Wonder if they have Army surplus stores like the UK

I thought I had this solved with Airportwo's find, but there are some good options in that list. Many thanks for your effort. I suspect I will end up getting the bag that's easiest to actually get hold of.

    ^, ^^ Thanks again!

I'm going to try and get something sorted this weekend. It was my daughter's last day of school today and it looks as though we're off down to the coast somewhere next week.

Well Harry's proved he's fukin massive lipstick fan. I always wondered what they got up to on rigs. I reckon its like the WWII shows the blokes used to put on for each other coz there's no women. Dress up like women and do musicals, drink a lot and then all of a sudden Harry in susies and lippy looks like linda lusardi and is getting back scuttled whilst gazing out to sea with Tom shining the light down from the lookout post encouraging sea creature genocide. Fukin weird shit that.

    What happens offshore stays offshore...

Too many women working on the boats these days anyway!

Linda Lusardi? A blast from the past... saw her in Cinderella at the Weston-Super-Mare playhouse last Christmas and she still looks great. Kept 'em covered up though...

Mendip, the LGBT thrust is penetrating even the most sacred of male professions, do the Trannys get their own hongs?

Razor: buy a cheapo when you land
    Scissors: what for?
Knife: you're not a serial killer, are you?
Soap: isn't that what hotels are for?

Small rucksack with the essentials and you're off like Gough when you land and into a taxi while the rest of the flight is still kicking their heels at the baggage claim.

A quick bump... just to bring closure for anyone wondering...

As I was going back to the UK this Christmas I bought a bag online and sent it to my mum's house. We always come back to Thailand with extra check-in luggage anyway.

After all the kind recommendations above, in the end I went for an Alkpit 100 litre duffel for £75. This ticked all the boxes and looked very strong and very simple. Out of the recommendations, there was nearly always a problem. Either no longer available, absurdly priced, not available for online purchase, etc etc. North Face I decided against because the plasticcy material looked very prone to ripping to me. This Alkpit bag is made of a kind of woven nylon that looks really robust.

Anyway, one long haul trip and it still looks as good as new... which is a lot more than could be said for the Samsonite.

DryDock 100 litre Duffle Bag - with rucksack straps and waterproof construction - Alpkit

You should get a few years out of it, i still think Cordura which i have a couple of is best, short of taking a stanley knife to it i can't see how it could rip. We'll wait the bump in 18 months
