I don't know what it's like in England, but working in Thailand isn't like the US. Your skin color is an issue here. I had Thai teachers question whether I was a native speaker. Just smile, show up to work everyday, and put in a decent effort. You'll already be ahead of most of the jokers that teach English in Thailand. And contracts don't mean a thing. If you feel like you are being jerked around, find another job. The demand for native speakers far outweighs the supply. Use it to your advantage!

Actually Thailand is very pro-employee so if you have a contract it is binding and push comes to shove you will win a court case if you're in the right.

Nabs told me the other night she was called a farang as well as references made to being Asian.....! We're all stared at over here ;)

Damn she had more problems in two weeks than myself, wife, two kids, and my wifes mom have had in 15 years.

Truth be told, all of us 'old' hands have had one bad experience living in Thailand - whether that be with taxi drivers, landlords, employers, or some arsehole in the pub...

The thing to remember is, try never to let yourself be put in that position again. And the only way you can really achieve that is to trust nobody but yourself. Because bullshit artists are more common here in Thailand than 7/11s (which includes Thais and foreingers)
