    Your Ethnicity?

I was stuck for a Birthday present for my mum a few months ago and decided on one of those DNA testing kits to find your ethnicity.

My mum was originally from South Shields, NE England, and her side of the family has a slightly swarthy look. There was apparently a community of Yemeni ship builders in that area in the late 1800's and the family rumour was that somehow some Yemeni blood had slipped into my mum's side of the family, unofficially...

Anyway, the DNA results came back and my mother is 36.3% Scandinavian, 30.6% English, 24.1% Irish, Scottish and Welsh, and 9.0% North and West European.

Not one drop of Arab blood! The swarthyness must come from West Europe, France maybe. The high Scandinavian proportion was a surprise, although Viking genes are generally common in North-east England. Looks as though my mum's side of the family have been in the North-east for many centuries.

This has sparked my interest. Sadly my father has passed away but my plan is to get two more kits, one to test myself and another for my daughter. Apart from the usual Isaan mix of Thai/Laos/Khmer she probably has, there is talk of Chinese and Indian blood in my wife's family. Should be interesting.

These kits are not cheap and the results should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, but its fun to get an idea of your heritage. I was wondering if anyone else has had any experience with this kind of thing?

I haven't done it but it would be interesting.

Where did you source the kits from?

I haven't, but it would be interesting to see if the science matches the supposed family history.

Good idea for a gift, or just plain curiosity. How accurate is the testing, %-wise?

Most of the kits are priced at less than <$100 USD: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3317...-dna-kits.html

My wife had it done and the results indicated that her bloodlines contained 84% Thai/Lao/Khmer, a smidgen of Vietnamese, a dash of Malay, and a heaping tablespoon of sub-continent.

I am sure there are many companies doing this, but I used www.myheritage.com. You sign up on the website and pay for a testing kit that they then post to you. You swab the inside of your cheek and then send it back to the States for the DNA tests. The results come back by email. Its not cheap at £75 a go, plus the postage of the kit back to the States, but a good present I think.

I did this while visiting the UK over last Christmas. Not sure how efficient posting the kit back to the States from Thailand would be, but its a small package so should be no problem.

    Yes!

I work with a lot of Norwegians and they take exception when I tell them I have more Viking blood than them.

It was my ancestors who were Vikings, raping and pillaging across the UK. Their ancestors stayed at home in Norway picking berries and catching cod, or whatever else they did in those days.

I am pretty sure that most of the men were involved with the raiding parties leaving the women to raise the children alone for many months at a time. But yes they got up in your ancestors for sure.

I think that these tests are good for an estimate of ethnicity but the results should certainly be taken with a pinch of salt.

I'm going to press on and get myself and my daughter tested regardless and it'll be interesting to see what they come up with. The kits will be posted from the UK so any SE Asian indications for my daughter will be purely down to the DNA.

English, originally, traceable back to around 1330. No need fro DNA.

Apparently related to Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great like most Europeans. Probably some Roman.. Family from north of the Danelag line so I may have bit of Scandihuian also.

My 3 kids were conceived using IVF. I suppose their results will show as 50% dirty test tube and 50% Som tam residue.

I am of Irish heritage both sides, my great grandfather was a tinker repairing pots and pans.
    BUT.
Family legend has it it that I have Spanish blood due to shipwrecked Armada sailors who were saved from hanging by the English. Trouble is they had to stay in cold Northern Ireland instead of warm Spain. And yes I do look Spanish. Dark eyes, used to be dark hair, narrow face.

Dumb fuckers paying to have their DNA sold onto insurers and hence medical problems susceptibility/increased health care costs.

I prefer to believe my grand mother's story of being the offspring of an Italian Duke.

Impressive. My Dad traced our family back to before the civil war but not before Henry VIII. The destruction of the church records in our area of Lincs meant it wasn't possible.

The family has the blonde hair, blue eyed trait of Viking origin, although my nan and I have brown eyes.
