Currently, English is the language of Business. Wanna buy a truck load of widgets from China or Poland. English.
All logistical companies in every country use English. When the krauts order from Vietnam... English.
Methy has logorrhea. An acute case.
Tex, sometimes you say something humourous. Sometimes you say something halfway intelligent and I think there is more to Tex. Then there are the times you say something as dumb as dog shite. Telling the English, English is not their language rates up there with the dumber things you say. Anyway in a few years it wont matter to you as the main language in the U.S will be a derivative of spanish. In some areas it already is.
Indeed.
It was a topic frequently broached in such circles, often raised by a shouty woman with badly dyed hair. Seems one of them wrote an article finally picked up by Bloomberg.
'Englishes', yes indeed, just the sort of 'word' one would hear as background noise while thinking 'How early can we reasonably hit the bar' earlier in the century.
Hey that reminds me...I wonder what happened to Matty's plans to work in Thailand again?
Maybe this thread will tempt him out.
I assume it's the poster called Matthew ... who is an English teacher: View Profile: Matthew - TeakDoor.com - The Thailand Forum
xanax = crazy dog = Dragonfly94 = britanicus
Jeff is our beloved HuangLao.
Thank god English is the worlds mother tongue. Imagine if all these English inbreds you see hanging around bars in Pattaya had to learn another language. That would be educationally impossible. They would have nobody to communicate with but each other.
Maybe you should watch the video through to the end. "In conclusion, the language has got so little to do with England these days, it may well be time to stop calling it that. If someone does think up a new name for it, it should probably be ... in Chinese."
The name of the language may be English, but it is not their invention (vast majority of words were merely borrowed from other languages) nor theirs exclusively. It follows along the absurd lines of whacking beans, a tomato, some grey, tasteless bloated sausages, and a fried egg on a plate and referring to the aggregate as "quintessentially English." WTF? Desperate for an identity?
Indeed, for the last 200 years, England has had far less impact on the evolving language than half a dozen other countries.
Focus on the message, not the poster.

Britanicus is a top poster -- stands in opposition to the TD hair-twirling girl gang. I wouldn't trade 20 Maanams for one Britanicus.
Back in the early sixties I remember a scottish migrant family moved in next door to us. My mother doing the neighbourly thing took the woman to the local shops. She had taken her to the hairdresser and introduced the woman to her friend. Her friend said, "Its quite amazing that you can already speak some English".
English unashamedly takes words from other languages that is why it constantly evolves and stays relevant and that is its' strength. When I was a boy we heard about tidal waves. Now they are always called Tsunamis. Languages evolve or lose relevance. Most people would struggle with Chaucer and some even Shakespeare. In 200 years people may need linguists to interpret some of todays English, however it will still be English.
I believe the french have an institute to try to keep the "purity" of french, a canute like gesture that will not work.
If nothing else, this thread once again reminds us that the forum is the domain of decrepit old men with one foot solidly entrenched in the backward, Trump-esque views of their time, as Hugh has demonstrated time and time again elsewhere; the other, well, you know where, thankfully....
He might well be one of the decrepit old men that you speak of, but he’s also absolutely correct regarding the adaptation, and future of the English language.
Interesting that, in the developing Asian world, where no direct translation exists for contemporary usage, the locals simply adopt the existing English word.
