In the Bezos thread, Headworx said it's doable (perhaps cynically or sarcastically).
Here's a thread to propose what you would do. This is an excersise in the theory, so lets set some parameters;
1. Just for the excersise, I know lots of you would be generously giving to charity and friends, but lets just rule that out. This is to be how you would spend the dosh on yourslef.
2. As per 1., it's on yourself, so no throwing it out the window or burning it.
3. Lets assume we don't want to be ridiculed and despised for having ten Lear Jets that we never use. Two is enough. Same for a couple of outrageously outfitted Boeings. Perhaps a superyacth in sitting at your ten most favourite destinations. The point is you can't (for the excersise) just keep buying ships/planes/islands and not using them.
4. Lets limit it to 3 paradise islands: Pacific, Carribean, and anywhere else, maybe you'd like a pristine, cold island off Canada or Alaska.
5. No money-making ventures. No business. This is spending on yourself only.
6. The premise is based on $70B in the bank and earning 2%. You are going to die in 40 years time and have no heirs. You can dig into the cash, live off the interest, or a combination.
WFT would you do with the cash @ $5M per day or $70B on hand?
I think you'd have difficulty spending it. Some weeks, months even, it'd go like beer down your throat, but to keep up that rate of spending for 40 years would be a full-time job and sort of goes against the spirit of having such riches.
OK, me:
I'd get my 3 islands. Total around 150 mill. I think only one 787 jet is required, and a Lear hangared up to reach each of my islands. A superyacht moored at each island, with full time skipper, deck hand, and house staff. A superyacth in Monaco for Med cruising, and one in Australia, NZ, and Singapore.
Luxurious properties in BKK, SIN, SYD, AKL, and Florida. A mansion in a forest in Finland, maybe.
Personal asistants.
A personal chef who travels with me.
A few security guys. Make that 5.
A live-in house staff in each property.
That's about 35-40 full-time staff. Paid well, staff bill would be only $40,000 per day. Chicken feed.
And assets above would be circa 2B. Lets splurge and say $10B in assets.
There's still $60B in the bank. What to do?
