Yes, and Happy India Independance day, and happy Auckland (NZ) Aniversary day.

Mind you, I would prefer Jan 25th to be "Australia Day", being the supposed day before the Brits took the land from the natives.

    And it's my dad's birthday.

Australia is a British invention. That is what is being celebrated on Australia day and that is why it is called Australia Day.

The day is chosen specifically because it is the day that the first fleet landed which marked the beginning of the history of Australia.

If they want to celebrate the pre-1788 history of the land that became Australia then choose a different day.

Or, it marked the day the British subjected Aboriginal First Australians to death, land theft, and oppression.
Why not celebrate in a way that does not rub salt into the wound? Why can't you see your "British invention" is a slap in the face to native Australians, who, within your lifetime (give a couple of years, maybe), were still covered under Australian law by the Australian Fauna and Flora Act?
These nignog black fellas are fauna of Australia, not people, right?

^ So are you another that thinks the dirty black fellas are Australian fauna and that your white ancestors rightly oppressed them?

Then why celebrate the anniversary of the start of their oppression which quickly eventuated into them being legally classed as fauna?
Wouldn't it be better to have a day memorialising the nation's roots that didn't accentuate the fact that the Brits took over by force and treated the inhabitants as animals?

here's a link I posted on BiP's construction thread you might enjoy it, and agree with it but I don't.

    https://www.news.com.au/national/aus...27c6b376c6c391

I don't have a problem changing the date of the celebration but it won't change history as many seem to think it would.
My argument is that who is at fault for the current situation, the white folks who invaded the country or the aboriginals who didn't fight hard enough to retain their land.
In New Zealand, as I am sure you are aware the Maori stuck to the invaders and as a result have maintained some control/power in their country.
There are many elements to this story and you chose one that suits your argument.

I have seen many things in regard to poor treatment of Aboriginals (even this word in now considered politically incorrect) and would like to think that one day there will be no discrimination but like MLK said its a dream.

Unfortunately I have also seen many things done by "native Australians" that would and should not be tolerated mostly to themselves unfortunately.

I don't have any idea how to solve the issues but think it must be assistance from those same people.

In my mind a first step should be taking the Union Jack out of the corner of the Aussie flag and putting the Aboriginal flag there instead.

    Proud Aussie

He didn't say that. He expressed an opinion, the same as you have done.
To me the day is a celebration of the nation and all of us [well most of us]
and if you and others want to whinge about it that's why we celebrate it.

    The Union Jack stays.

Also the stars part of the US flag should be changed to the Union Jack out of deference for the merkins political heritage and to present a consistent theme when confonting ne'er-do-wells like chinkies on the high seas!

Happy Straya day to all from the land of Oz. Always good to go on the piss with.

Thank you for exporting decent steaks to other former colonies and random parts of Asia. It’s demand led so it must be good.

The Abos should be glad it was the British that invaded.

It might not be the best outcome for them, but it sure is the least worst.

If it wasn't for the British, then it would have been the French, Spanish, Dutch, Belgians or Germans.
If not Europeans, then the Chinese, Malays or Indonesians.

The British imperialism wasn't less bloody or less destructive of the Aboriginals than its competitors, but its ultimate outcomes 200+ years later are infinitely better.

Compare and contrast former British colonies with all the other former European colonies.
Societies like Canada, Australia and New Zealand have (relatively) good governments, constitutions & prosperous economies.

    Happy Australia Day.

Happy to stand corrected. Urban myths do have a way with them, don't they?
Do you scramble off and look for flaws in everything I write? Seems so. Why the obsession? Hate being dumber, less educated, and a runt?

But glad for the correction this time. For once you're right.

That myth aside, it doesn't change the facts that Aborigenes were very mistreated...Stolen Generation, Tasmania, apartheid laws pre-1967...

    Obsessed.

    Yeah, right.

The fauna myth being put aside, there is still lots of reasons for Aboriginal Australians to feel somewhat aggrieved at making an "Australia" day the anniversary of the start of the conquest and oppression of First Australians
    This from today's NZ Herald.

Australians have a right to be proud of what has been achieved in only 240 years. It has been turned into a country with a stable government and economy the envy of many other countries around the world and we punch above our weight in many discoveries and inventions. Unfortunately there is always some fooking wet blankets that can see only the negative.
"The fauna myth being put aside" Are you Sir David Fooking Attenborough now and an anthropologist to boot? What the fook would you know about it.
I have lived all over australia. Spend a night at Alice springs emergency ward, the aboriginal women beaten up so badly that you cant even recognise them, or the high number of child rapes in remote aboriginal communities that doubtlessly were caused by white mans oppression to idiots like you. Fook off and debate aboriginals on another day, but base it on more than a fooking headline in a New Zealand paper or some green party literature you found in the toilet.
