Australia is a British invention. That is what is being celebrated on Australia day and that is why it is called Australia Day.

The day is chosen specifically because it is the day that the first fleet landed which marked the beginning of the history of Australia.

If they want to celebrate the pre-1788 history of the land that became Australia then choose a different day.

Why not celebrate in a way that does not rub salt into the wound? Why can't you see your "British invention" is a slap in the face to native Australians, who, within your lifetime (give a couple of years, maybe), were still covered under Australian law by the Australian Fauna and Flora Act?

I don't have a problem changing the date of the celebration but it won't change history as many seem to think it would.
My argument is that who is at fault for the current situation, the white folks who invaded the country or the aboriginals who didn't fight hard enough to retain their land.
In New Zealand, as I am sure you are aware the Maori stuck to the invaders and as a result have maintained some control/power in their country.
There are many elements to this story and you chose one that suits your argument.

I have seen many things in regard to poor treatment of Aboriginals (even this word in now considered politically incorrect) and would like to think that one day there will be no discrimination but like MLK said its a dream.

Unfortunately I have also seen many things done by "native Australians" that would and should not be tolerated mostly to themselves unfortunately.

I don't have any idea how to solve the issues but think it must be assistance from those same people.

In my mind a first step should be taking the Union Jack out of the corner of the Aussie flag and putting the Aboriginal flag there instead.

It might not be the best outcome for them, but it sure is the least worst.

If it wasn't for the British, then it would have been the French, Spanish, Dutch, Belgians or Germans.
If not Europeans, then the Chinese, Malays or Indonesians.

The British imperialism wasn't less bloody or less destructive of the Aboriginals than its competitors, but its ultimate outcomes 200+ years later are infinitely better.

Compare and contrast former British colonies with all the other former European colonies.
Societies like Canada, Australia and New Zealand have (relatively) good governments, constitutions & prosperous economies.

Australians have a right to be proud of what has been achieved in only 240 years. It has been turned into a country with a stable government and economy the envy of many other countries around the world and we punch above our weight in many discoveries and inventions.
