if you can get away with it why not, but if caught then yes, no other choice than pay the barfine. But Butterfly hasnt yet tackled the real etiquette question. When is it acceptable to "outbid" a girl who already has a customer (though has not yet left the bar with him).
I was amused to see this happen to Butterfly earlier in the week - no sooner had he bought her a lady drink then she vanished with another (aged) punter....

Now here is a quandary worth exploring. I've often been tempted to oubid a punter, but did not think it proper etiquette. However, once when I was in Patong I offered to barfine this pretty wench bartender only to find that she had already been bought. She told me that the punter had offered her 2000 baht for an all nighter. I was tempted to outbid this old bastard out of principle, but decided to look elsewhere down Bangla Rd.

I just had a meal at Chockchai Steakhouse (very nice it was too) and generously left about 7 Baht in coins.

Anywhere that adds a service charge can definitely get fucked.

On the subject of tipping, I'll admit that I'm a cheap bastard and hate the practice. That's one good thing about Korea --- there's absolutely no tipping here.
What annoys me is when the waitress (or a fit gogo wench) brings back the shiny tip tray with 15 baht --- all in 1 baht coins. Like she expects you to leave them. Or even better --- a few of those plastic stacks of one baht coins. Whenever that happens I always snatch every one of them out of principle, and then give them away to some poor sod or drop them in the bin.

Are people really concerned about spoiling the market, or do they just prefer to keep their dosh?

^A bit of both, I reckon. The "market" you speak of has stayed relatively the same since 2004 when I first visited (although barfines have slightly increases in some areas). But in some parts (particularly Phuket) the girls have become very greedy and are starting to demand more. Just my 2 cents.

Oh and as to the question of my identity, no I am not butterfly. Ask a mod to check the ip if you doubt me. Hell, I don't even have a sock on here!

But the prices did rise, and this is nothing more than extortion when consumer "surplus" (another economic term you should be familiar with) is in jeopardy. A tip is not the price, it's a gratuity for extra services rendered, which is not what is happening at the bar, there is not "extra" service for bringing back your change, and the product sold is the same regardless of the place, uniformly constant in every bar. It's acceptable to pay more for the quality of the venue, but that's totally a different issue. If the staff was "exceptionally" curtuous and "available", then a tip would make sense. In an overcrowded bar full of drunken farangs and rude staff ? not happening.

^ Yeah I tend to agree here. While in many places the prices of the girls have stayed steady, the tipping has gotten worse. I mean, what the hell is she doing? She's bringing you your drink and taking your money. Where is the customer service? Am I tipping her so that she doesn't throw the drink in my face or spit in my beer? I just hate how they "expect" you to tip them. Now if she'd take her top off and let me cop a feel, then that would be tip-worthy.

not the first time, happened to me many times. This is the etiquette to follow as I did when this happened:

- IF YOU WERE TO BUY A LADYDRINK, and the lady sit next to you for less than 1 minute and decide to go to the bathroom for 45min or go sit next to another customer with another drink or is barfined by that other customer while you are waiting, then it's good practice to contact the MAMASAN and ask NOT TO PAY FOR THE LADYDRINK. Usually, this is done without much fuss, and the evening can proceed like nothing happened. It's ok to be outbid, it's good practice, you only lose your turn, not the girl.

^haha. I would never think of contacting the mamasan. Showgirls are the worst culprits of the vanishing act.

Maybe there should be a thread on bar etiquette for the ladies. Things like you must talk to the punter at least 5 minutes before asking him to buy a drink, no leaving once said drink is bought, you must show us "the goods" before we agree to barfine you, no talking on the cellphone once said drink is bought, etc.

I knew of a guy on a forum with the handle heliogeorge who did have a laminated typed list he would hand to any girl he planned to barfine.

It would list all the things she was required to perform - eg blowjob without condom.

The lady drink isn't a drink at all but a small payment to enjoy her company. I don't care if she orders a glass of water as long as she is able to make a reasonable conversation. The LAST thing I want to do is get her pissed because it is thought to be humourous. Blokes who do that make me sick.

As for tipping, well I usually leave the shrapnel in the tray [B1 coins] but I will pick up the B5 and B10 so I have change for the taxi. We have all had the "sorry Mr me no change" bit, right. If I have known the girl for some time I will slip her a red one. I will NEVER tip the bar. I buy a drink at their prices and that price includes the drink and the service. A good time chatting with the girl is the extra and I don't mind tipping for that.

The wai.....lol. I can't believe that any expat who has been here more than 3 months [me ? 13 years] would wai a BG or even the mamasan. We know that a polite nod of the head is all that is really expected in that situation. In fact I don't wai anyone unless they are older than me [which means I don't wai much...lol] or in a "higher" position within the context of the situation. It is important that the significance of the wai does not get corrupted out of ignorance.

I tipped 2 girls 100 baht each last night - my choice - It was at one of the 2 bars that I regularly drink at and I don't do it every time - but it gets me well looked after every time I am there.

I tipped the Taxi driver 17 baht ( 163 meter + 20 phone , round up to 200 ) - the fare schedule has not changed in the last 10 years and fuel has increased substantially , so unless the driver has pissed me off severely I give some extra willingly.

I didn't Wai anyone , but I shook hands with the bar manager.
