    Apocalyptic Commodities

What would you horde to trade if the global economy collapses due to war or ecological collapse or whatever wide scale disaster?

I know many would say gold, or arable land, water sources etc.

Personally, I would horde freeze dried coffee. I think it would be very valuable, particularly after a year or so without.

Fags, booze, medicines. Whatever you can get in the lead up to apocalypse and can store.
Gold is easy to store but how many people post-apocalypse will have the wherewithal to trade X commodity for an item worth hundreds. Gold is now £982 per oz.

Possibly grain. Fruit and vegetables grow fast enough and can be collected easily enough, but grain is difficult to harvest.

    ^how's that taste?

Will an electronic wallet work in apocalyptic conditions?

^Anything electronically based would likely be inaccessible, worthless. Paper money, too, for different reasons.

I like the herbs, spices idea.

Alcohol and salt are easily made and obtainable in a world undergoing global contraction, can be locally sourced nearly everywhere so not a premium value on those.

In a world constrained by the collapse of mass transport, locally sourced items will be a priority but modern tastes will still need to be met, hence my coffee idea. Cannot be locally sourced on 80% of the planet.

Yeah I like that idea too. I'd go into withdrawal without my coffee.

When the faeces hits the fan only the bad guys will survive.
So work on being the baddest.

water purification tablets, antibiotics, guns, cigarette lighters, nose candy and weed (personal use). I plan on providing things that can extend life (water purification tabs) and take it (guns) while being to high to have any morals.

A hotdog stand and a huge supply of Mcdonalds "fresh" bread. That will last for years. Then me and Dilli can go into partnership. I'l make em, he can sell them.

Food, water and a place to shelter, but goldfish to the one who said nothing's worth hoarding if you can't protect it.

Only those prepared to think and act outside of 'civilised' norms might survive the apocalypse, while the other 95% will whimper like that lady calling 911 for permission to break a window because the place was filled with smoke after the second plane hit.

I'd probably herd the fam over to LT's place, well stocked and safe enough with that 4-legged deterrent at the gate.

I won't notice the collapse if I'm in Isaan at the time.

...the rich vein of apocalypse entertainment (Walking Dead, Doomsday Preppers, Youtube vids, etc) should already have prepared many of us for the post-apocalyptic world: engineers, medical personnel and thugs are the most valuable...lib arts majors, not so much...horde everything until it's stolen, then steal from someone else...life in a well-fortified and stocked bunker (think refurbished missile silo) or one roaming the littered streets in search of stuff to stay alive and continue roaming seem to be the alternatives...personally, a jumbo container of Xanax and a jar of Prego should be enough for sweet dreams to oblivion...

I'd never heard that story...I'm speechless. An apocalypse would certainly speed up Darwin's Theory of Evolution.
