Feel like a bag of crunchy bugs? You don't have to go to Thailand any more.

Barbecued bugs will be on the shelves of a Gloucestershire supermarket on Monday as edible insects go on sale for the first time in the UK.

The day after I'm A Celebrity.... Get Me Out of Here hits our TV screens, supermarket giant Sainsbury's will start selling BBQ Crunchy Roasted Crickets.

And a Gloucestershire branch will be one of the 250 stores nationwide that will be trying out the insect snack for the first time.

Any jungle copycats looking for a Bushtucker trial should head to the Sainsbury's Local in Cheltenham High Street and test their appetite for crickets.

The Eat Grub bugs – acheta domesticus, or house crickets – are farmed in Europe and come in packets of about 50, at £1.50 per bag.

"It's clear that consumers are increasingly keen to explore this new sustainable protein source."

    FUCK RIGHT OFF!

"Diners at Heston Blumenthal’s Michelin-starred Fat Duck restaurant can savour mealworms from the Netherlands in edible soil in a savoury “woodlands-themed” dish – part of its £325 tasting menu."

    FUCK RIGHT OFF EVEN FURTHER!

    Edible soil?!

You really have no idea as to what you're missing Harry. Admittedly I draw the line at some things but deep fried crickets are lovely. Even better if they're full of eggs. I draw the line on eating cows placenta, highly prized in Isaan, and giant water beetles.

The back legs on crickets are a bastard for getting in your gums though, got to rip them off.

Silkworm pupae are great (a bit like lamb chop marrow) but the crunchy bugs are just crunchy oil to me.

Me too. If there's any protein in the bug, it's a tiny amount and it must be dwarfed by the fat from the oil.

That's why you should eat them raw as nature intended

Not a bug eater, but silkworms deep fried with soya sauce go great with cold beer.

Roasted seasonal termites are quite decent fare.
    Accompanies the Ya Dong nicely.

Had some Ant Egg Salad bought from the market in Phi Mai, had a quite a few whole ants included; now officially off the menu, for what ever reason i spent quite a few trips talking to the big white telephone, think the extra formic acid didn't help and by Christ it burnt me throat.

    Sure..
Especially the more substantial Khi Mot Daeng, which are usually used in rice dishes - adds a nutty/earthy essence as well as complex protein.

Yep....that too, deriving from the ant itself [which is popular as well], less the larvae.

Lightly toasted or steamed - the ant's citrusy essence adds to most anything quite nicely.

...the greasy insect remains dripping with diesel available on roaming carts...don't appeal...however, I'll probably reconsider if there's a zombie apocalypse...

Lice are the vectors of several human diseases - epidemic typhus for example.

I personally do not know of any human disease transmitted by, say, crickets.

A malady I too suffer from.

In addition I know that a lot of the vendors buy used oil to do their frying - those things gotta be a health hazard.....
