A walk down memory lane or Soi 33

Back in the nineties when working for a company in Bangkok, myself and a few friends were known to frequent this street. All the bars were named after painters. Degar, Renoir, Monet are a few that come to mind. There was also a Safari themed hotel and bar which I was told was built by a South African. Soi 33 was quite a lively place at night. Some nights we'd have a drink in every bar and get pretty plastered. I was a lot younger then and so was full of youth stupidity and cash.
I later stayed occasionally at the Safari hotel(I forget the name). They did a decent breakfast out by the pool. Renoirs was quite lively and you would generally meet someone you knew there (apart from the girls). I use to keep a private bottle of Jack in Degars. It was a bit quieter and easier to talk. The first picture was once Dalis. It was originally twice the size but shrank by 50% as customers diminished. Down the side street was the Bless residence which was quite a nice hotel with black onyx bathroom. "The office" was next door and myself and a friend frequented it in later years as well as Wall st. The only fresh sign of life seems to be Check Inn 99 relocated from opposite the landmark hotel in Sukhumvit. I couldn't tell if they were knocking down the Moulin Rouge or renovating although I suspect the former. A lot of fun times were had in that street. A shame to see it look so dilapidated. I never found somewhere else with that atmosphere but maybe I just got older.

Was there back in the 90's also, Hugh. Got a bit misty-eyed and nostalgic there for a minute too.
Been based in Rayong now for ages, and don't get up around there now, tbh.

The safari place you are on about with the pool.

Wasn't that Livingstones? (excuse the spelling).

Millionaires Row as it was known

I used to enjoy Mojos with the live bands, had some nice totty in there too as did most of the Soi.

Still lots of sleaze to be had with a few massage parlours, a soapy-Heaven something and Demonia fetish club.
Theres some nice restaurants there too. You'd do better to walk that soi at night.

I often stay the S33 Hotel.

The Soi is fine by me.

Seems to cater more for the Asian clientèle then Western.

Went there a few times in the early days, but it was just never my speed. Remember taking a favorite 20 year old bi-sexual stunner from Superbaby Agogo in Pattaya up to Bangkok for a dirty week in the 90's, and to put costs into perspective Barfines at Superbaby were 400 Baht and LT was 1500 - 2000 Baht for top shelf. So one night we went hunting for a third wheel in Soi 33 and the evening was a disaster. Her comment in the taxi on the way back to Nana won't be forgotten easily: "I know why they call it Soi 33 now, all the girls are 33 years old and want 3300 Baht for LT" .

Haven't been there for at least 10 years now, and haven't heard or read anything that suggests I'm missing out on much...

Thailand is a different country now,

and Bangkok like we knew is barely recognizable now,

same same all those SE Asian countries, too much change in very little time

When Bob and his numerous partners opened the office and then Mojo's you didn't have to go anywhere else for a full night's entertainment.

Sadly I believe it has been ripped down now and replaced with new developments.

Not far for me to go at the time as I worked in an office in Washington Square. Long gone as well. Bourbon st relocated to Ekamai. Anyone remember the Texas bar in Washington square? A bit of a dive from my recollection.

    Remembering "the 90s", indeed...

Real old hands will be recalling the romantic eras of the 60s/70s, less this Gen X remembrance.

Which is like 40 years before you started canvassing this forum for a job in BKK or PTY with a work permit, asking how much barfines were, and seeking advice on where to buy sex toys in BKK.

But yeah, you were here in the 60's and 70's and by plagiarising pics of that era from Pinterest, that proves you were here. You fucking fake....

Spent many a night and morning in the Texas bar.
Not a dive from memory, but very friendly.

You remember correctly! strange place, busy from 06:00 till midday with ex CIA & military types, after that it was dead, they were all sleeping! Gumbo was good.
Silver dollar was my bar of choice in Washington, it was a dive as well.
Never rated 33, I was living on 28 for years, rarely called into 33, just kept walking to Cowboy.

Last time I went was with you and my cousin, in 2010 and that weird guy turned up then vanished. Fat sweaty bloke who spat when he talked...Forget his name now

That was the first time she tried guinness. Was that the Office? And some other bar later after she'd fucked off
