    New Bucket List

Having travelled a great deal, but never visited USA I am indebted to the many merkin posts on here, politics excluded of course.

It has re-ignited my long held fascination with a country of such diverse geography and human content.

My ideal would be a road trip, in the shape of the old confederate flag cross.

Ideas and suggestions welcome, especially how much time to allow for the trip.
    TIA

    Amazing Country, interesting people.

Forget any preconceptions or experiences of 'Yanks abroad' ... some of the warmest, inviting people
I've ever had the pleasure to meet.

    3 favorite places

    The Grand Canyon
    Yellowstone
The Painted Desert (head them off at the pass cowboy)

    3 favorite cities

    San Diago
    Boulder
Las Vegas ... much to my surprise!

    3 favorite things to do

    A Mets game in NY
The Staton Island Ferry @ night NY is STUNNING on a clear night across the harbour.
Meeting people. Not being shy, almost everyone gets mistaken for being English.

I drove the western seaboard Highway up to Lake Taho ... brilliant !

    Enjoy

When in a Diner, order one meal for 2 people ... they are usually huge in size and could feed a small African country.
Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ...

There's a reason why a cross is not the route map of anybody's holiday journey, ever.

I like most Americans who have travelled, especially those I met on military duty.

I am English. No chance of being mistaken.

New Orleans was a hoot. A hot and humid hoot though.

Vegas is a great time and VERY affordable IF:

    - you go during the week
    - you gamble responsibly

What are you planning to drive?

    cross-country rentals can get steep.

    might consider buying a beast...

Lost of options for this one. All would depend on the ratio of city to countryside you want.

You could do something like this.

    Seattle>Portland>Salt Lake City>Denver>Oklahoma City>Dallas>Austin>Houston>New Orleans.

You could choose to go further south to San Francisco and over through Vegas as well. But the above route would show you a pretty damn diverse slice of America. I have driven it both ways and it is incredibly scenic with plenty of interesting things to see along the way.

New England to San Diego could be a good trip. Especially if you stay off the interstates.

just got back from San Francisco, first time there.
good looking city, and also had to go to palo Alto
    all very nice

    but

so many homeless people, it really is a mess, if I was doing a checklist of current tropes:
tattooed gang member in 7/11 picking up his Amazon order
crack heads on every street corner
drug dealers in some red/ black trans am things
old white trump supporter waving flag on corner

not saying I didn't like it, and people were genrally wonderful, especially enjoyed giants/ braves baseball game

fascinating country, but I didn't want to be eaten by hobos
    we won it at wemberlee
we on it in gay paree...

I did a cross country road trip back in 1993 with a friend of my brother it was great. We started in Annapolis drove straight to Denver because it was during that big flooding in the mid west that summer we couldn't find a hotel room. Then hit every state to the west as well as Mexico and Canada. On the west coast we started in San Diego and drove up the coast to Seattle. We drove just over 10,000 miles and hit 25 states. If you plan to hit the National parks, back then you could buy a golden eagle pass and use it to enter all the national parks maybe state to I can't remember. It took us about 3 1/2 weeks. If I was to do it over I would spend more time but we were young. We only stayed in a hotel four times camped the rest.

Thanks for the proposed itinerary. Sounds interesting and doable. Also for the tip on avoiding grampa.

I’m a country boy at heart, so national parks would be a must.

The cities that have tempted me would be, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, New Orleans and Boston.

Hick got me thinking seriously about Alaska too.

...unless, of course, you want to avoid soulful Christian areas in Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and, more generally, the fly-over states...I suggest a focus on the northeast (early autumn), the southwest (mid-autumn) and the west coast (anytime)...
