He comes across to me as an American living in the US. Perhaps he came to Thailand once on a "find-a-wife" package tour but failed to impress anyone enough or meet anyone desperate enough.

A male is always being judged for their "value". Drop below a certain "value" measure in all relationship aspects and things tend to go south, whatever the nationality or culture. Thais are no worse. In many ways they are superior as they have personally experienced life far more brutal way of living and a foreigner may bring many benefits to their situation.
