Do you never stop trying? No, my opinion is not that of an international language trainer, as you well know. It is the opinion of someone who has made the same observations that many others have made.
There's hundreds of example. Words that in Engish (proper English) that end -our are spelled -or in the US (harbor, color etc). Words that are properly spelled ending in -re end with -er in the US (liter, center etc), words in English that end in -ce appear as -se in America (defense, license etc).
Axe vs ax etc.
And so on.
Spelled as it sounds.
IMHO.

An ass is a Equus africanus asinus. Or a Donkey. So where the word Asshole comes from is beyond me.
