    Clever round about promotion, A.B.....

Writings of such sort are usually based upon very limited exposure and experience [broader sense] and more on fancied cultural stereotype.
Those with real connected tissue might always suspect such grandiose and false literary makings.

    As in: Full-o-shit.
You're wrong, on that ^ score, as well, Mr. Reggin.

The book was actually written, as a non-fictional treatise to depict the mentality of the average Richard Forbrain Society member of expats.

Fifty years of documented arrogant Western expat stupidities, speaks volumes. Of course, there are always exceptions to the norm. That much is a given fact.

However, I was (apparently) mistaken to believe, that such intellectual exceptions, to that norm, could (miraculously) be found on the TD platform. Obviously not, especially when considering the abundantly present majority of pretentious profiling behaviors, demonstrated to the contrary.
Indeed, a truly pathetic bunch of adolescent, angry old people. Take a long, hard look at yourselves, instead, for a change of venue. Whew!

I do really get this feeling from many of them. Too bad because this forum could be so much more..
They want to only keep it the same little clique , with the same mentality it seems.
    Cheers

Thanks, but this seems quite a bit off base based on the research I've been doing and people I've been talking to living in Bangkok. If you are a bit out of the center of Bangkok, you can get a furnished one bedroom for 10000-13000 baht.

Yes you can but AO's numbers are about right for more central locations.

I don't find much to like about Bk these days. Fine, if you work there and are paid Bk wages you suffer the inconveniences and reap the financial rewards. But why on earth live there, if you don't work? Sure beats me, but each to their own. If city living is your thing, I rate CM & Patts much higher, and unquestionably much cheaper. A 'world class metropolis'? P'fftt. I remember well when I liked the place, but that was long ago. But then, there was no question- we liked it for the shithole it was. Now the shithole has mass transit, and is much much more expensive. Unless you hang out in the slums of course.

I don't want this to descend into a rant, so let me keep it simple. It's old, third rate hogget dressed as lamb. KL is a much superior metropolis these days, much more so. And it doesn't even belong in the same paragraph or even page or book than places like HK, Sing, Tokyo or even Seoul. You want an actual comparison that means something, compare it to Manila or Jakarta.

So why bother comparing? That's like comparing Chittagong to Sydney. Anyway, have to go there soon to renew me Aussie passport, sigh.

Thanks for your opinion. I think I'll find it very different to places I've lived like Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai to name a few, but I've visited quite often and want to live/work there for a awhile. I can understand how it may not be optimal for people that are retired though.

I found the link in the OP, quite interesting to learn about how the cost in Bangkok relates to other big cities. Worth a glance imo.

Look, it's what it is. Like any big city, you'll find venues, circles, people to like etc. And you are being paid to be there- significantly more than you would be in other parts of Thailand I trust. I'm sure we will hear from you in due course about the excellence of the management, the Thai bureaucratic mindset, and how they put the business of educating the educationally starved Thai above all else . Suffice to say, if daddies rich you cannot fail or discipline them, in fact it seems to me you cannot fail anyone. That is why I could never be a teacher here, I'm privy to too many stories.

My only advice- live somewhere convenient to where you work. Then immerse yourself in it, and make the best of it. No reason you can't have a good time, however long it lasts.

    Actually, he's quite correct.

The rents have been going up, my guess is because they are catching up with prices of condos which are through the stratosphere.

Even in my neck of the woods which is nowhere close to BTS or MRT (but somewhat close to the Airport Link) 30sqm condos are being rented for minimum 11,000 a month now. We are talking typical pool/gym condo high-rises built by Cambodian slave labor 2km from the airport link.

Good news is Nasa Vegas residences can still be had for less than 4000 a month.

Thanks y'all, I'm sure to find out sooner or later. ^The place I'm looking into looks like a reasonably priced area. Fingers crossed.

Ha, yes I've heard about this from a few friends that work in BKK. Great advice, thanks!
