If you're gonna indulge in western luxuries then Bangkok hasn't been a "really cheap" city (in the truest sense of the word) for at least the last 10/15 years.

You've got to know the city pretty well to find it cheap by Thai standards too. Capital cities tend to be like that.

It puzzles me why the question is even being asked in this day and age.

It depends entirely on the lifestyle you want to leave, obviously. I still think the housing represents great value for money if you look around- particularly at slightly older condos where you'll get more space for you buck. Most of my salary went on dining out after bills and savings. I don't find the cost of western food to be unreasonable considering the cost of importing ingredients. Thai food is still delicious and cheap; plenty of food courts and the like for a good feed and all but the most high end of neighborhoods should have some kinda mom and pop shop house style dining set up. I prefer Asian food personally. A decent international school will give you a good housing allowance- heck, even the bilingual school I worked for gave a free if spartan house which I was comfortable enough in for years.

I lived in the suburbs and they were cheap.

Ditch the Starbucks. So many better options in BKK.

Bangkok is cheaper than Shanghai. KL and Bangkok are simular cost wise. If you pursue a "western" life style, Bangkok is more expensive than an equivalent in the west.
If you go "local" much cheaper than the west.

    Thanks folks..

Like most places if you live like a local, your expenses are low, but if you indulge in western goodies you pay way more.

I've lived in both of these and still spend a lot of time in each every year. Neither are cheap.

Food is much of a muchness in terms of price and quantity, but KL will edge it overall in terms of overall cost. It is a better developed city though.

Yes, they're cheaper than London and Tokyo. No, they're not "cheap" in the western sense anymore.

Yep, but it's still a capital city.

By the way, aren't you the poster who left last week vowing never to come back again?

Apologies if I've confused your username with someone else.

Agree. Both are major urban centers and hence pricey. Lived in both myself.

    Sure.
As this associated subject matter has been touched upon on numerous occasions, any comparatives or standards are quite moot and irrelevant to anything.
Every instance, situation, lifestyle, and and accepted comforts will differ from the next -

Consider the OP, who tends to be rather innocent as well as retaining a surface conventional thought process.

^I did think this was a Thai centric forum, where questions about Thailand in particular were welcomed?
I mean most of what you discuss is Thai related? Again, you have a problem with me and what I do/say again.

I agreed with most of your post, but how does a person become a process?

Last week it was bovine v porcine that had you looking like a nob.

This time it's your complete lack of grammar that does for you.

Why don't you have a day off?

Wow, shows your maturity by giving me a red and saying mean things. You are laughable and are the one that is naive and innocent. Acts like he is connected, when you are far from it. Joke

And in a month we'll probably find she's decided somewhere like Dhaka would be a...*ahem*... better place to work after all.

From a few short trips that I had to KL, it was about 20% cheaper thank BKK probably due to better exchange rate lately.

    15,000 to 25000 for a 32-50 sq meter studio or 1bdr.
    3,000 to 6,000
1,000 x 2 for a short evening twice a week. For a good time with dinner a couple of grand a pop.
