    cricket ball.

ok just for my education... wot are the benifits of tampering with the skin of the ball, and wot are the possible effects of such tampering.

It effects the aerodynamics via air flow difference over the rough and smooth sides and can cause the ball to swing unpredictably (including reverse) which obviously makes it harder for the batsmen to time and hit.

The ball can continue to move through the air after it hits the ground.

    Some players pick the seam.
I never cheated but with the right weather conditions could get very late swing after the ball had pitched and seamed a bit .Gave the batsman and the wicket keeper a hard time.

when the ball hits the ground if it lands on the seam it can bounce with more unpredictability , thus picking at the seam a little to make it wider - rough patches and cracks in the pitch can also help with this

depending how you hold the ball as you release it - seam upright , or at various angles , will vary how it will move in the air and hit the pitch - concealing the seam during the runup minimises the time the batsman has to see how you are holding the ball

swing is supposed to be achieved via your arm action , but as the ball becomes more scuffed on one side and has been polished relentlessly against the nutsacks of all player on the team you can use it to add to your original arm swing or use it to oppose the arm swing and then swng the other way as the ball slows and the effects of the arm swing are defeated by the aerodynamics - like a belgian butterfluffer , it will swing both ways

well done and thank u lads. l t the spin on the ball and its trajectory there after, has nothing to do with tampering. i can see no real benefits to tampering whatsoever. any aerodynamics involved , in my opinion would be so little as to be void.
    love the vid l t

Good thing your opinion doesn't have any effect on aerodynamics then.

They wouldn't have attempted to do it if it had no effect. That's kinda the whole point.

Had s problem the other day aerodynamic issue some idiot had fitted the wings on our plane upside down.
Same issue with a cricket ball depending on how you hold the ball.

I found some balls could be made to swing easier than others even without scratching. Just keeping one side polished and a good arm action. Humidity seemed to have a lot to do with it, as well as a nice breeze.
