I finally quit smoking 6 years ago after many, many attempts.

The information in Allen Carr's book was a big help but a free iPhone app called LIVESTRONG MyQuit Coach finally worked for me.
Sounds silly but the app really helped with the support side of things as you could chat with a community of quitters.
Sadly I think it is only on iPhone as I couldn't find the app on Google Play store.

Good luck to everyone who is trying to quit.

    Good luck to you all.

I quit thirty years ago after twenty years of pack a day (20/pack). Cold turkey. My motivation was the "new" information about tobacco causing cancer coupled with the associated sin tax increases. When I started a pack cost 35¢, a pack of Liberty tobacco was 17¢

Key I found was keeping myself busy. Kept my mind distracted from the constant craving and desire. Morning coffee and after dinner were the "hard" spots.

New years day has been and gone and it was my resolution to quit on the 2nd, couldnt do it on the 1st due to drinking obligations. But its now day 3 of no ciggies. Would like to say its because of my incredible will power but it was achieved by the onslaught of a Flu from hell. Dry hacking cough for days that has even given me sore ribs. Impossible to even contemplate having a smoke. Ive also been chewing nicorrette gum. Still feel like shit from the flu but it has at least got me through the first couple of days without nicotene. Cant even look at a beer either, which is also a good thing as its usually a pre curser to smoking ( for me anyway)

To those currently giving up : one aspect is to imagine the actual reality of what it would be like to have emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cancer of the tongue, or any one of the ways it can kill you.....slowly and painfully.

Pretty sure that nicorette gum has nicotine in there

It takes 66 days for the human body to form a new habit. Get to that point, cold turkey and you've cracked it really...

Good luck to all of you, it ain't easy - i finally cracked it 6 years ago after a few attempts but used drugs to do it on the NHS; they rewire you so your brain doesn't recall the addiction etc.

    Who told you that bullshit.

2 days pal. That is that. Stop all nicotine intake and 2 days later you are not a chemical nicotine addict. The little tickle in the tummy saying "I need nicotine" fades and you are done with it. I see you are taking the sensible option and replacing smokes with patisserie products.

Yeah that's the problem with quitting a bad habit, one usually finds something to replace it.

While I do not sign up to NYR stuff, I did start back in October to reduce my intake of alcohol. I considered taking up smoking to replace it....555.

All kidding aside, while I was not a daily drinker, I am down to 2 drinks a week (usually same day back to back). I actually went 2.5 weeks with nada. Of course unlike quitting smoking where you just do not buy them anymore, I have a fukin liquor cabinet loaded with top booze that I walk by and look at all the time.

Yeah but that doesn't break the habit or stop the constant craving.

And then, beside all this textbook directional nonsense, every situation and individual will differ greatly -
    Absolutes need not apply.
