Life can be a mother if you're old single and broke.
Very true, known 3 people who took early retirement from Oz, 2009 GFC wiped out a lot of the private pensions.
When the money ran out they had to return, welfare doesn't cover much, room dog food and baked beans, they topped themselves.
Went back to OZ last year, 7 months told no longer a resident, no welfare for 6 months, wife, 2 kids born in OZ, I couldn't find a job, too old, wife worked in a Thai restaurant, 12 hours a day, 6 days a week and paid $10 an hour.
Kids went to school got their English up, which was good, but we will never return except for a holiday and to see family.
Not the country I remember.
Your wife was being exploited if she was only getting $10/hour.
Yep, but except the pay or no job, she has PR and got more than the $5 on hour paid to other Thais on student visas.
Everything is off the books, when they make too much money, they were told to close the credit card, EPOS machine down, cash only.
It's going on everywhere, government wants cheap lalor, keep wages down.
Doubt I'll go back to live in the UK. The government doesn'tlike third national wives and making it hard to want to return. A pity as the wife loves the people, very friendly, happy and wanting to chat.
Germany's winter is too cold and too long for us. I don't want to spend 100%in Thailand though. I need a change now and again and that costs money. Quite fancy summer in Germany and winter in Thailand, just need to convince work that it's mutually beneficial.
Moved back to Aus on Jan 1st after living and working in Thailand for 11years.
Aus is a nice country but has changed that much moving back is basically the same as moving to a new country, Iam back in Thailand next week for a job interview as I simply do not like Aus anymore.
Thanks for all the comments..
Canada or Thailand, I don't care.
Xhamster is everywhere.
Now, is it really that bad?
I haven't had a job since 2002, but to be honest, if I go back I would do a minimum wage job (which is $15 these days). It would be enough with a property paid off. I wouldn't even mind moving to Alberta as I heard that even these days they need schmucks for labor intensive jobs.
It's my wife I'm worried about. Her English really stinks, yet thanks to Thai protectionist laws she has a very good job due to he "English" where in any other normal country they would hire a Bulgarian to do her tasks.
I'm much too adventurous to go back to closed minds.
Alright, but you said the worst part.. I just said people haven't changed.
Alberta is booming now.. that is where my interview is actually. Full-time teaching jobs in Ontario are very hard to come by. You usually start off by substitute teaching and get contracts. I've already done the whole substitute thing before. In Ontario, many good jobs also want you to be bilingual. I speak some French, but not fluently bilingual by no means. I wouldn't want to work at a minimum wage job as it isn't much to live on. The cost of living is very high as you may know.
That's good that your wife has a good job in Thailand. I doubt she would be able to get a great job in Canada with little English skills. Lucky your property is paid off as well. :)
I've lived outside of the US for over 40 years. No intention to ever return.
lolz

Looks as though a move back to the States is in the near future for me. Will know for certain by the end of this month. Not looking forward to it but duty calls. :(
Interesting that you write "a move back to the States" and not " a move back home".
My home is here in Chiang Mai. I fully intend to come back here after I am freed of my daughterly duties.
^^ Not an Oscar winner, was it?
I left the UK in 2002. So much has changed over there, (and nothing positive), that I think I'd be like a fish out of water if I ever moved back to old Blighty.
A few reasons why I'd oppose a move:
- The weather is mainly crap.
- The cost of living and taxes are high, for little return and quality of life
- I cannot speak Albanian/Romanian/Arabic/Urdu etc
- My chances of getting a decent job at 58 years old are very low, Tesco shelf-stacking here I come.
I know I will get a rise out of a few folks but the hell with it.
Seppo land isn't all that bad from my perspective. Hell, I didn't even know we were shitbags untill some of you brought it to my attention. I guess life got in the way.
My thoughts are varied on the topic as like anywhere, if you are worth a bag of salt you can cure

Why was that James? I take it you are not Australian is that correct? $10/hour under the table is not uncommon in many Thai restaurants. There are many Thais that get welfare payments so don't want to declare their income and have their welfare cut. Obviously not your wifes case but it perpetuates low wages in Thai restaurants.
The Australian government is tightening up on all forms of welfare. A friend of mine who went to Thailand for a holiday had an accident and spent time in hospital and was delayed coming back to Australia. He applied for the pension on return as he was already over pension age but no longer able to work due to the accident in Thailand.
He was told because he had been out of the country for more than 6 weeks he had to wait one year before applying for the pension even though he had provable medical reasons for staying more than six weeks.
Damn Robertson, have some green...
Works for me.
Yea, I was hooked from a small fry on. I'm still jellowfishes of da bigger fishes.
You'll make a good catch for someone, fish.

Truth be told TB has no idea what she wants to do. But loves being the center of attention. Hence three threads. I am moving to Thailand. Holiday ideas for Bali, and I am thinking of moving back to Canada. It seems to never end.
